Happy Christmas to all and a belated happy birthday to Mardatha.

I am lying on the sofa following Christmas lunch; DH is falling asleep, DS has just gone off to see his girlfriend and DD has just got back from feeding the horse and is setting to work on the Lindor.

Had an OS Christmas lunch when I discovered that DH had munched his way through the packet of walnut pieces I'd bought to make the stuffing... spent a quite sizeable part of the morning bashing whole walnuts with a hammer until I had enough. Did you know that a shelled walnut weighs approximately one tenth of an ounce? Neither did I. And I needed four ounces. You begin to see where the idea of convenience foods comes from :rotfl:

Have a happy one, folks! :D

Happy everything ChocClare and everyone else too . :D

Anyone who fancies watching something traditional that isn't to do with food and cooking and domestic stuff from 100 years ago (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that it seems that it's all I've watched recently :D) might enjoy the Sea Shanties programme with Gareth Malone that was broadcast on Beeb 4. I watched it last night and really, really enjoyed it. The music and the singers are just wonderful.

DSs are busy and I'm on my own trying to decide if I can brave the freezingness of the kitchen to tackle any washing up! I might have to bribe myself with chocolate... or maybe a cup of tea first.

Hope everyone had a peaceful Christmas. Me and OH went over to see Dd and co for an hour. I like it to be a day when every one gets respect and no one has to follow the old rules of 'you must do this and see these people and be thoroughly tied up in knots' So we just had a coffee with Dd and played with Dgs and step grandson for a little while and left them to it. Came home and popped the half prepared lunch in the oven, Ds fell asleep so we ate where we sat and he had his later. All in all contentment for us. Got lovely O/s pressies with a pair of gorgeous wicker boxes with lids of Oh for me and a new ironing board off Ds. Am looking forward to a New Year continuing the O/S life and living how we want. Even Oh was relaxed and happy today, the fog of depression lifted from him so will have to see if it lasts.

Ballymackeonan how lovely to hear from someone who relishes being alone instead of hating it. Life is certainly what we make it. Anyway none of us are totally alone with this site to visit.

Lets count our blessings and look forward to those resolutions!

I was one of the lucky ones who never started smoking, but a friend who's given up uses knitting or crochet as "something to fiddle with" - and, as she's now got 3 grandchildren, it's a great way of making pressies for them!

I'm also on my own this Christmas, have been for a few years. I spent years after looking after elderly relatives - the "best" Christmas was the one I spent in the local casualty with my aunt, there was nothing wrong with her and she went back to her sheltered accommodation to a turkey dinner, but I got home at 8pm and ended up having a tin of cream of tomato! And no matter what I cooked for Christmas dinner when they came to me, sonething was wrong for someone.... I celebrated the first year of being my "own woman" by going to the beach. Here, it was grey and foggy all day, but 25 miles away at the coast the sun was shining, and I had the beach, at Dundrum Bay in the shadow of the Mournes, to myself all morning, and then came back and cooked my goose.

Going anywhere is not an option today, as it's still bitterly cold and there's about 10in of snow here. But the morning sun is lighting up the trees in the local park with a pale pinkish tinge, and I'll probably go for a walk there later, and come back to a big bowl of the stew I prepared yesterday. I've a pile of DVDs, mainly BBC classic serials, and knitting, and plenty of wood for the stove, and several good books, so it's really a day for OS pleasures!
    Lovely post Ballymackeonan, sounds idyllic.

Mardatha - I believe you. Honest. Same as I resolve not to buy so many half-price chocs over the past few months and lose track of how many I've bought so even after I've given some as pressies I still have tonnes to eat. :D

Am typing from beneath a pile of choc wrappers!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Mardatha....happy belated birthday, won't forget it as it is also my dd1's...she was 40 and has been getting an awful time from her brothers.

Thaw is well and truly underway and we have normal water back so am happy at last, going to bed soon as don't want to be up when the pub closes and the celebrators return home!
