Awwww! Slightly sick feeling one at this moment - just tried a recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes as part of dinner tonight. Put it this way - BOY OH BOY I wonder if American tastebuds are different to British ones.....saltY:eek: I won't be trying that recipe again in a hurry.....will have to find some other way to use up green tomatoes next year - because it CERTAINLY wont be THAT one again - yuk!!!!:rotfl:
Green tomato chutney? And I pickled some this year but haven't tried them yet as they haven't been done long enough.
Just don't make green tomato pie filling. It's like sweet mincemeat. Only with an odd tang ...0 -

..well I think that was one of the ones I had down as a possibility. That description sounds rather offputting to me though.....:rotfl:
I'm not a great one for chutney - sugar! I think my next attempt might be oven green tomatoes (ie baking them in the oven combined with eggs, evaporated milk, water, flour, salt and pepper). I think that will be either a love it or hate it recipe too....but I used to like a bit of evaporated milk with a lot of things some time back - so I might go for that. It will be next year now before I have anymore I expect - as I've now used up the last of my green tomatoes - so tomorrow nights dinner will involve summat posh I havent tried before from the farmers market - romanesco this time (which I havent tried before - but think I will probably like...). Dont know what to do with it yet - so will have to investigate....0 -

You can cook romanesco like cauliflower or broccolli... and it tastes like a cross between them
The shape reminds me of pine trees growing ... so appropriate for this time of the year don't you think?A family that eats together, stays together

martha my grandaughter's birthday (well 1 of them i have 9 lol) is on 23rd dec too she will be 7 this year i have aways taken her to the panto on her bday and then we have family party in the evening my mother alway comes down from wales for it as her birthday is the 24th dec shes 90 this year They both get bday and xmas presents Whats more 3 of my grandson's birthday are in the first 2 weeks of january, xmas time very expensive time of the year round here. They would be vey upset if birthday rolled in to xmas but i try not to spend too much and tend to buy in sales during the year except for mum who is blind and deaf i usually check any new products in royal deaf cat- this year a mic with neckloop to help her hear convos She sez can cope with being blind but people talk over her head as she cant hear them properly makes her really cranky as nothing wrong with her marbles lol In past have got her a loop for living room so she can hear tv and phone but no good when in other houses so i hope this will help0

My mother could've been a founder member of this forum LOL - she didn't believe in wasting anything- all I got when I moaned was "you'll get plenty presents soon enough so dont be greedy "
My youngest was born on 1st Jan, and I forget his birthday every single year :rotfl:

Hi Mardatha
Found any good websites yet? - re celebrating Yule....
I'm making mental notes to myself to think that I must remember to mark these sort of occasions because my logical/rational mind goes "Dont be so ****" - but I am finding that waning moon times are BAD times for me - and I have the sort of days where I think "Ah:mad: - thats TWO bad things happened since I got up...I'm going back to bed...nothing can touch me there.....". Then we go into waxing moon times - and I've duly spent the last few days being given useful things/finding useful things/etc....hmmmmmm:idea::think:- well I think one thing might be for me/for us all to send up a quick "Thank you" for positive things happening in our lives. Errr...who knows what/who/etc we are "thanking" - but anyways..."Thank you I've been given this, thank you I've been given that, thank you I've just found this..." etc.
i suppose its one way to keep a positive take on life.
So - I'll finish with the realisation I had today that even if MUCH worse happened to me regarding my job than would actually ever happen even at worst - I will still have enough money to live at least a reasonable lifestyle on....:D. So - all the Old Style "plotting and planning" pays off in the end.....:D0 -
Foraging continues up here as I think we're a bit behind the south of the county and I gathered kilos of sloes, brambles, rosehips and elderberries today. Tommorrow will be a preserving day and the girls are helping me make bramble jam, rosehip jelly, elderberry cordial, sloe gin, bramble vodka, green tomato chutney and chilli jam and oil with the last of the chillies harvested from the greenhouse. Between that and the frantic knitting I am well on the way with Christmas (which I need to be as I'm working full time this year).
If I didn't have 2 little girls to buy for it would be a very oldstyle Christmas this year unfortunately I don't think they would accept a knitted mobile phone from Father Christmas.:D0 -
Haribo, lovely to see you and hear about the nice things you do for Yule....it is chaos here as there will be 10 adults and 6 children for dinner on 25th.
I messed up twice in matter of December birthdays....DD1 will be 40 on 23rd and DD2 38 on 22nd....DS1 came between them and for four hours I had 3 children under 2....I was young then! Was always determined that the girls should have separate presents and because of this I think that over the years they have done very well.

Haribo, I have just found a place at the end of my street to forage brambles - no Im not daft its a walkway made from an old railway line and Ive never been up there as its not really a place for ladies who don't have a big dog - anyway theres thousands of bramble bushes but all totally bare. You are lucky to have been picking today.
Ceridwen, I thank the gods and goddess's every morning when I manage to start another day. I wasn't impressed at Dgs waking up at 5.15 am but just seeing that huge smile of his made me forget the time and relish the moment. I am grateful for everything I manage to do whether driven by some divine being or just the result of damned hard work, but I do think both things go hand in hand. I learned very early in life not to take anything for granted and after nearly losing my life 5 times over the years everyday is precious. I also feel this site is a product of peoples passion for life otherwise many would simply give up and sit in a corner with a pile of unopened bills burning merrily in the hearth.Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0
