I think the really OS would def work for me with my location and circumstances. But it wouldn't for families with kids. My OH holds me back a wee bit, he isnt into the "pioneer" bit at all, just saving money...esp HIS!
I find the hardest bit is trying to stock up while on a limited income, its very slow going. But I really enjoy the feeling of having enough food in the house to decide not to go to the supermarket if I dont want to .0 -
That looks cool, we had a similar one here a while back 'One Land' which was a really good series, where they got three modern day families to go back to how life was in the 1850s when the first settlers arrived in New Zealand.

Not sure if you can watch episodes outside of NZ.
That looks really interesting, thanks for the link
it says episodes not available outside NZ... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

But the economic upheaval has made me question the value of money. I remember hearing a story about Burma, most people saved money at home. Overnight, the government declared that certain denominations had no value. There was no way of trading in the valueless cash people had saved at home. Overnight, banknotes became valueless.
When I heard that story, I thought oh well, that could never happen here. And then the bad times came and whatever faith I had in governments and banks disappeared. So I think there's a lot be said for investing in non-perishable food or other things that are useful as well as saving money..Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

I had got to the stage where I could not get into my small storeroom. It's not that I have a larder to put an Amish family to shame, rather it's because I got the DDs to 'put the shopping away' (Ha!!) and there were bags of dry goods shopping on the floor that had never been unpacked and stuff piled up all higgledy-piggledy. So I spent a few hours organising it all and now I can see how much I've got (and in some areas, I could actually outdo an Amish housewife - must stop stockpiling now). Feels deeply satisfyingIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

I can't get into my stash of food at the moment as we are packing the house up for the landlord to do rather a lot of work on it. And my cupboards are a tad bare though I do have lots of flour :j Dh won't eat shop bread anymore - suits me! - but Ds is back home and I now have to train him to eat HM bread, he is a little resistant at the mo but Im sure the midnight munchies will get him eating it. I am doing quite well though making food from whats in the freezer but keep finding the cooking bacon at Mr T's is very thinly sliced and I cannot resist it. Now that Sil has moved out we even have eggs to spare!!! at last. He loved huge omelettes but in his defence he did make them for all of us so i am equally guilty. things are definately getting harder by the day though aren't they?Clearing the junk to travel light

I will get my caravan0
