I'd love to know more about your cherry tree - I'd like to have pots with fruit trees on my yard and I'd particularly like a cherry but I didn't think cherries came in a small variety. What variety is your tree, how long have you had it, where did you get it from, how old when you got it, how big is the pot (height and diameter)? (Sorry about all the questions - I just want to know everything you can tell me
Hi JillS, I have to be completely honest and say that I can't remember the variety ( it might have been Stella), my brother bought it from Tesco for my birthday 2 years ago. Because I don't have a garden and live in a housing authority house, I stuck it in a large pot so it could come with me when I move to my forever home. The pot is 40cm high and about 48 cm across, and it was maybe about £7 from Poundstretcher. Not certain if it is self fertile or not as there are a lot of wild cherry trees near me. Try googling 'dwarf cherry trees' but check your variety is self fertile, otherwise you will need two to get any fruit. Apparently they will still grow quite tall, about 20 feet. Have a look at this link http://miniatures.about.com/od/livingminiatures/a/dwarfruit.htm for a bit more info on dwarf trees.
Thanks very much for the tips on bookmarking. NickiFirst they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.0 -
Welsh Poppy, I hope your mum is ok.
Ginnyknit, congrats on DD's new house, you won't know what to do with all the space once they've moved.
Mardatha, I wouldn't want to have to clean out a chicken farm that size. Have to admit to lusting after a vintage Beetle though, I should start putting away any money I save from being more O/S and make it a reality instead of a dream.
Completely off topic I know, but had to share. I had bought bottle of PLJ (lemon juice concentrate) for making drinks, and couldn't stomach it and nobody else in the house would touch the stuff. Discovered I could use it instead of fresh lemons so used it to bleach mildew off a bedsheet.:TFirst they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.0 -
ceridwen - your father was a very wise man. And you are a very wise lady to have followed his advice. When you read some of the tales of woe about women having saved money and being screwed by rotters on other threads here. you start to understand how a lifetime of living financially prudently can be undermined by people who are just looking for an easy life.0

Well - I was surprised when he said it - as I thought "But its women who go after mens money - I'm a woman, so no-one will go after anything I have......". It didnt take long at all before someone tried to:( - and got a flea in their ear..
I DO read those threads you mention sometimes - with astonishment that the people concerned have let someone else "play fast and loose" with their money by "borrowing", "borrowing", "borrowing" or not paying their fair share of expenses and are often still married to/living with them and the other person is still trying to do so....
A couple of times when my parents offered to loan me money for some work on my house - I borrowed it and duly paid it back when arranged. Other times - when some work had to be paid for then I went in for a "commercial arrangement" with a firm - rather than have the "inquest" there would have been from my parents any time I spent money on something they deemed a luxury if I hadnt paid them back yet (even though they were being paid back on time as arranged). These days I take the view that either someone is close enough to me that they know me well enough to know that I follow the phrase "neither a borrower or a lender be" and they wouldnt even ask - and if they are that close then I will give them the money if I have it to spare and see that they need it - but I still wouldnt lend any to people generally (certainly not a spouse/partner that played "fast and loose" with money).0 -

Morning all
Hows life in O/S land for you today. Just sent kids off to Mr T for a few bits and bobs. Stock cupboard a bit low and they felt like a walk. Am going to make the cucumber pickle today. Fridge is looking good with all the marmalade and jam but am still not up to foraging so whats there will have to do. Going to have a surf and see what I can find to make cos Im bored! Now have about 20 large sunflower heads all in need of drying out but have rigged up a rack in the shed. Think I had best pick most of them today when I find someone tall enough to reach them - anyone got an 18 foot tall hubby I can borrow:rotfl:
Gingercake for pud, so Bm will warm up the kitchen. Got a line of towels out so not to far behind with the washing. Wishing I could go out today but need to save cash for holiday.Clearing the junk to travel light

Very autumnal here, cold, chilly and damp so my washing isn't drying:mad: and my gardens been flattened by yesterdays massive heavy downpour..again:mad:
I've come to the conclusion that as much as I would like to be really oldstyle...thinking chickens, orchard, massive allotment, walk in pantry etc the fact that I have not got out of bed before 8.15 am over the weekend means I'm not really suited to it
Or it could be after 20 plus years of getting up at 6am, doing housework, going to work for 10 hours back at 8pm, cooking dinner, falling asleep whilst watching news at 10, oh and [STRIKE]talk[/STRIKE] grunt at kids/hubby at some point, then repeat again the next day! that I just lie in at weekend because I can now, don't during the week, but up until I left work even on my days off I still got up between 6-7am.
Maybe my body is just getting older than my age (still 47, just).
So those of you older than me, do you still jump up out of bed nice and early every day?0 -

I turned 55 yesterday:eek:, and despite having family over and having nice food & a drink (or 2?) still got up at 6.30 today. Never used to -when I was a teenager I could sleep for England and thought my Dad was mad because he used to get up early every day, However, I do find myself having a bit of a doze in the afternoons at the weekends now (although sometimes feel like it at work too lol), so think my sleep pattern has changed.
DS bought me a gooseberry bush for birthday, so will have to plant that this week (have week off work), and twin DGS's (aged 4) inspected my tomatoes, peppers and chillies and said I was "a very good Nannie" for growing them. They then asked at dinner "why has Nannie put grass on the potatoes?" (chives).
Have only been in house 3 months so not had too much time for garden but have lots of plans for next year. Next door neighbour is amazed because I have a clothes line (a rotary standing in my parasol base) -she hasn't got one and has been here for 10 years and uses a tumble dryer for everything.0
