might be worth a punt at that price! Thanks for the tip

Google for any problems with the machine before sending it back, as some of the defaults may need to be changed.

Actually I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is the reason they have to be sold as 'refurbished'. The wrong wireless driver was installed, so they probably had to open the boxes to install the correct driver. Once opened, it won't be sold as new.
I'm sure you will find it is shiny and new. :)

Dont forget you can pick up the cheaper style netbooks for under £100 and they weigh 600g!!
There is obviously a steep trade off with what the can do but I believe they are ok for internet browsing
and you certainly wont get xp/win7 it'll likely be windows CE.
But it's unlikely you would find these suit you, so consider the following
How is your dexterity, if you don't mind my asking?
the smaller the netbook screen the lighter it will be however the keyboard will be smaller and vice versa.
visually there is a big difference between a 9" screen and 10.1" screen but then the weight goes up.
Finally if weight was more important than price you could look into a Solid State Drive (not to be confused with SD cards etc) instead which I'm told are fairly lightweight. Whilst these are better at power consumption (slightly) they are significantly sturdier than a standard Hard disk drive. So if you drop your netbook it wont die taking your data with it. They are however much more expensive per GB. So to keep the price low you would need a small drive
Also, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong but SSD's and HDD's are not interchangable so what ever hardware your netbook takes that's what you must use.

There is a lot to take in, but my best advice is to go to a shop like PC world (but for the love of god don't let them sell you anything!!) and try out a few netbooks. Get used to the smaller keyboard (important if your going to be typing and feel the weight in your hands, is power consumption an issue for you? 3-4 cell batteries last about 3 hours while 6-cells can last 6-7 hours but again they are going to weigh more and don't forget to give the mouse touchpad a try as some of these can be frustratingly small too.
I'm assuming due to your condition you pay attention to every comfort and little niggly things like hunching over a small keyboard or constantly having to move your hand over the touchpad just to cross the screen can make the difference between cherishing your new toy or wanting to throw it at the next PC World salesman.

Finally you need at least a gig of ram and i'm told xp will run a bit better on a netbook than Win 7 and also use less power consumption

    Toshiba AC100
    Asus U1
    Lenovo Skylight

(wish I could afford those, LOL)

Srsly though, when I borrowed a fairly new laptop from a friend, I had to get my OH to carry it when the weight of charger, disks, bag etc was factored in :( not fair!

You are a nerd. I had to Google to find out about those machines. :D;)

    Too heavy..

It isn't, seriously. I've had a spinal op and still have 3 screwed discs in my lower back. They weigh next to nothing at all. If you can pick up a pint pot of milk, you can carry one of those.

Pint pot of milk won't weigh much more than 600 grams. Plus the OP's a girl...less muscle mass. ;)

Well, I think for the kind of price your willing to pay, your really going to have to consider a low spec style netbook. They usually have windows CE and I have no idea what value they represent but they are very light and very cheap. probably because they don't have a very big screen and have no hard drive. You can get large(ish) SD cards now so space isn't as bad an issue as it once was, but you might find yourself very frustrated with such an inferior piece of kit compared to a "mini laptop"

Sorry, but are you residing on the same plane as the rest of us?

Why would she has to settle for Windows CE for £200?

That kind of rubbish is sold for around £60.

She has already decided on a Zoostorm 10-270 for £144.

    Specifications
    - Windows 7 Home Starter
    - 10.1" 1024 x 600 TFT Screen
    - Intel Atom n270 1.6Ghz Processor
    - 1GB DDR2 533Mhz Memory
    - 250GB Hard Drive
    - Wireless 802.11b/g/n
    - 0.3m Pixels Webcam
    - SD Card Reader
    - 10/100 Wired LAN
    - Stereo Speakers
    - Internal Microphone
    - UK 80 Key Keyboard
    - Touch Pad pointing device
    - 2 x USB2.0 Ports
    - VGA Out Port
    - Headphone and Microphone Ports
    - Intel 945 GSE Chipset & ICH-7M
    - Microsoft Works 9.0
    - Microsoft Security Essentials Anti Virus Protection
    - 25GB Free on-line back up space with Windows Live
    - 12 Month RTB Warranty & Helpdesk Support
    - Up to 4 hours battery life

As you can see, no sign of Windows CE or a low specification.

Not at all sure about what you are thinking. Perhaps you are accidentally posting on the wrong thread. Either way, I'm sure you are trying to be helpful.

Weight of Netbook: 1.2kg. Plus, it is £280. £80 over budget.

Has there been some 'silly gas' released that hasn't quite reached London yet??
