Orange Data Charges

I've just checked my usage so far this month and this is what it says:

voice calls £0.261
text messages £2.444
data £338.941
other items £0.415
Total unbilled costs £342.061

My tarrif is this:

£35 a month, 600mins, unlimited texts, 250mb internet.

It says my data usage is 133MB so I've not gone over.

I went to spain 2 weeks ago and I have an iPhone. However I am one of the people that actually know how their iPhone works and how to turn off 3G, roaming and data. All I had open was the network so I could recieve text message and calls. That is why my text messages is showing a price of £2.44.

What do I do? I am not paying for 338.94 use of data which I haven't even used.

I'm at work so I don't have time to call up right now.

I'm very worried as I cannot afford to pay that!

Is there some kind of law that came into play anyway that is supposed to cap you at £50 worth of useage whist abroad.

I should have no data charges. the only time i remember using data was when I got back from Spain and was in the UK stuck at a service station trying to watch the england game on my phone where they got beat by germany. (not worth it) but still if that is the data usage I used I still haven't gone beyond my allowance.

The only thing I can think of is if there is a mistake and my data bundle is not active at the moment and no one has told me? But surely that would end at the end of my contract which is due at the end of this month.

What do I do? please help?

Wait until you have the time and then ring Orange for an explanation. Until you have that information there isn't much point in speculating about further action.

It does sound like you were using data while you were away, but as above, until you get detailed info on the billing its hard to say...

Do you have any info on this?

I've sent them an email through the orange contact us page so it will hopefully be logged before I call later this evening! I'm so annyoed! This shouldn't happen!

My bill isn't live yet, this is just a so far bill. The bill is live from the 22nd July and then my direct debit comes out the 7th Aug so I have time to sort it, I just need to make sure the same is not going to happen tomorrow when I get to Spain.

    Thanks for that,

I just called them and they said that there is nothing coming up on the account about my bill being that high and in the meantime I should wait until my bill is produced for this month on the 22nd july.

So for now I sit and wait.

Thanks for your posts. I'll update you on the 22nd.

I'll make sure my phone is turned off on holiday this time. I'm not risking it.

Once the bill is raised, the DD will follow as night follows day. Get it in writing that you are disputing this amount now and talk to the billing department advising them that the DD will bounce if they put it through without a confirmation that you have, indeed, run up such a bill.

There are an increasing number of horror stories about smart phones/Blackberry and overseas travel. I always take my old Nokia dumb phone when I travel overseas.

I have had a smiliar bill from Orange today. I went to Spain for 5 days, was at sea for three of those. I switched the data roaming off, never used the internet. I noticed every so often the phone would bleep as if I was getting a message, the roaming was still off. The man from Orange said it couldnt have been off and was updating itself. I was at sea !!!!!!!! Im so upset I cannot afford a £327 bill for something I didnt use. Can they not see that on our usuage. He told me that even if your iphone is switched off power wise it still continues to roam!! I told him I had switched the roaming off as well as the phone. He told me I shouldve rang Orange before I left and they wouldve advised me but, I did what it told me to on the phone! Im totally gutted. He told me to cancel my direct debit this month and wait until I get a letter asking for the bill and then pay in installments, surely this will affect my credit rating? is there anything I can do?

I would have said, you could have taken the battery out, but it's an iphone and you cant do that :p, you may have been at sea, but the vessel may have it's own cellsite, anyways until a bill is produced then the charges are not applicable.
