I take my hat off to you for being so patience with them. I would most certainly cancel the dd. I used to donate £5 a week to this charity until i found out What % actually went to good causes. I can't remember the exact amount but I cancelled my dd straight away. I can understand that charity's have overheads and not all have volunteers but the NSPCC take a large chunk of your money to costs.
Find yourself a non profit organisation and donate to them. It would not surprise me if they didn't have Bloody Terry Wogan on there books, i hear he likes to charge for his charitable work...

I once had someone do this (Age concern, I think) to me in the streets. He said "it's only £7 a month." Yeah, £7 a month I don't have.

Now, I donate £5 to RNIB whenever I order something from them. I have never had any letters or phone calls asking me for more money.

I suggested they be greatful that they get any money of me and the chaps reply was this "sir your donation is tiny it makes very little difference"

Please complain to the charity, they are paying the bloke that called you and he is damaging their fundraising. The guy obviously has no interest in who he is raising money for and is just after his commision. Most of these call centre calls are recorded just for this reason.

If you stop giving because of him he won't care - but the charity will be losing out.

If you don't want contact from any charity you give to JUST TELL THEM.

I give to several and have made it clear to them that I only want an annual report, no calls, no emails, no warm mailings and they are not to sell my name and address (take time to read the small print on tick / un-tick the boxes that are there asking about permissions).

Anyone seen the TV add, "Phone now, and give us £150" - some sort of eye operation thing as far as I remember... who asks for that much money?!!! So cheeky! Still, up to people whether they respond or not, but I did a double take when I first saw it :)

I have donated to the NSPCC by DD for many years and have had many phone calls and letters and I have always just tried to ignore the fact that they are spending the money I send them on trying to get me to donate more, but a few months ago they sent me a pack of raffle tickets in what can only be described as a Readers Digest type manner.

A colourful envelope full of stickers and quick reply incentives and it was just unbelievalbe, it must have cost a fortune. This was the last straw, I emailed them expressing my disgust at this type of waste of money and told them to remove my details from their contact list.

I received a very apologetic email that stated that they do raise a lot of money using these tecniques.

I have continued to donate by DD but I am becoming increasingly unhappy about doing so.
  • My Mam used to donate to some animal charity (can't remember which) and they would regularly pester her to sell raffle tickets. They made her feel so bad, she would buy most of them herself!
Is there a local hospice you could make donations to, OP. Or a local animal sanctuary. I'm sure they'd be delighted to receive your help. There's a pet shop near here that collects tins of pet food and donates them to a local animal sanctuary. I'm sure there must be others that do this.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

I bought Christmas cards from UNICEF a few years back and they started calling me at home in the evenings to see if they could get me to donate money by direct debit. I had to be quite rude in the end to get rid of them.

I gave a one-off sum to Unicef for the Haiti earthquake appeal and sure enough received several begging phone calls and a letter from them afterwards.

Like others have mentioned I now only deal with local charities and give to our hospice appeal......I also volunteer at an EMI nursing home.

I know I'm 'doing my bit'.

I only give to my local small charities who appreciate every penny and are always extremely grateful. I don't give to the RSPCA any more after my mother did some volunteer work at their head office and left after a week when she saw what they spent the money on. I give directly to my local RSPCA rescue centre though as they need the money and head office seem to forget about the animal welfare side of it.

Every charity should publish their expenses in newspapers. Some of them would make the MPs gravy train look positively meagre.

I used to donate to NSPCC and cancelled because they kept hassling me for more - I figured the amount of time and money spent on phone calls and letters more than spent what I was paying and considered it a waste of my money!

I now donate time and money to local charities instead.

Same here, they bombarded me with mail and tatty pens which made me wonder who was paying ;)

But the end for me was when they sent a very persuasive letter asking me to change my will. There are a lot of elderly, vulnerable people out there who are open to such tactics.
