Africa is the worst, totally corrupt.
You do realise that Africa is a continent, not a country? Jeez...generalisations like this really, realy annoy me. Yes, certain African countries are corrupt - some more than others, but corruption (even severe corruption) is not exclusive to Africa.
If people/charities simpy throw money at a country, then of course it is going to be skimmed off by those in power. If you live in a poor country and have a load of money thrown in your direction, then some is going to find it's way into government workers pockets, and much less will get to where it's needed. Also, just giving money wont teach a country/society how to become self sufficient.
Wouldn't it be a lot better to spend money on sending people out to teach the locals useable skills, so that they can earn their own living? This isn't a universal solution, but where it's viable it can make a big, big difference. Teach a man to fish, and all that.0 -
We were walking home from the village last night and, believe it or not, there were 4 young chuggers busy knocking on doors - at 9 o'clock at night!!
2 of the people I could see who had opened their doors were elderly and I overheard one man insisting that he couldn't afford to donate but the girl kept insisting 'it's a really good cause'.
He finally got rid of her and I asked him what the charity was, it was 'SCOPE'.
He said he'd asked her why they'd knocked so late and she told him that it was because more people are likely to be in then.
I told one of the chuggers, a guy, that he'd get short shrift if he knocked on my door at that time of night - not that he'd get any money off me at any time of day but at least I'd be more polite during the day. :mad:0 -
I used to have a direct debit to Oxfam, £4 a month, but they're just as bad as all the others. They were always sending me letters asking for more money. I just binned them for a while but eventually I got so sick of it that I sent one back to them with a note saying if they sent me anymore I'd cancel my DD. Needless to say I got another one within a few weeks so Oxfam stopped getting my money.
I now give £10 a month to the Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society, direct from my salary via Give As You Earn. My employer matches my donation and the charity gets Gift Aid as well (so they end up getting over £20 for my £10 donation). If you donate regularly its worth checking whether your employer has a similar scheme.0 -
I donate a little each month to some, but i inform them not to contact me about increasing my donation
the first time they do i ask them politely not to bother and warn them that i will cancel my donation if they continue.
The second time i tell them they have just lost my donation and immediately go about cancelling any DDs.MoneySpendingExpert0 -

'you are over 18 arent you?'
'no, sorry i am 17'

At which point I would have said, 'Well, if that's the case, I will cancel my donation. Please do not call me again. Thank you and goodbye'.0 -
not after one of the directors there paid my wife a cheque from oxfam for £600 for his nursery bill every month in person ( make you wonder if nothing else ). :cool:0

trouble is no matter how much you give them children all over the world will keep on dying through what the NSPCC are trying to prevent... Though if they didnt have to pay so many staff they wouldnt have to beg for moneyone of the famous 5
