The front legs are known as shoulder joints.

We paid £4 per kilo from our butcher last September, and it was a big lamb (26 kg) so was £104 - slightly over what you've been quoted. I would have expected it to be about £85.

I've ordered a whole lamb next week from a friend who has a small flock, and they have asked how I would like it cut. I had one last year and didn't specify the cuts beforehand, and we ended up with a lot of chops and ribs - delicious, but feeding myself, three grown up offspring and their partners takes a LOT of chops, I don't have a grill and apart from the odd BBQ it mainly gets roasted.

I love lamb shanks in the slow cooker, thought of asking for half legs and half shoulders as we can then cook two if everyone is here, and just one if not. What's the best way to get bigger cuts off the back, and not too many chops.

Take the chops as a rack of lamb instead, you can always cut into chops later if needed, a frozen rack will cut with a sharp cleaver.
