T-Mobile now have stock of this phone (Samsung Galaxy S). Mine is coming tomorrow :D

Yep, they phoned me about an hour and a half ago trying to sell me one. Apparently, they came in this morning. I had to explain that the very phone they were calling was, in fact, a SGS!

  • I've got the HTC Hero and that works for me great. It's just like the iphone except almost all the apps are completely free. Also it doesn't quite have all the red tape of the iphone making it alot simpler to use. Other than that I was told the LG POP was good... it isn't. I used it for a week and took it back. Awful awful phone.

Nice that you left out the rest of his quote there:

"Conclusion: “Gah, I can’t pick a winner, you do it…” Yep, as useless a conclusion as that is, I’m going to have to say that, on balance, both the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S are as good as each other. Not the greatest conclusion, since it doesn’t really help you make a buying decision, but it’s true. The Galaxy S has the bigger/better screen, and the Swype keyboard, but then, the Desire is better in every other way.
So, I can’t decide. Therefore, the winner of this fight between the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S is either the HTC Desire or the Samsung Galaxy S.
Essentially, what I’m saying is: whichever one you go for, you won’t be disappointed."

    Also, read the comments.

"Was due an upgrade last week. Vodafone operator (I’m in UK) asked me when I would like to receive my iphone 4. I said I don’t want that rubbish, send me a Galaxy S. (I had done a tonne of research beforehand). My other phones (for work) include BB Bold 9000, HTC HD2. I have used iPhones and the Google Nexus and G1 too, and yes, I have spent ages using the Desire as well. And the Desire is one of the best phones on the market.
But take it from someone who has used a Galaxy S for a week now. THE GALAXY S IS THE BEST SMARTPHONE ON THE MARKET.
    - Let me run this by you.
    - Bluetooth 3 allows fastest BT transfer rates known.
    - I have 64GB of ram on my Galaxy S (SD card plus internal).
    - Dedicated GPU, the display is more than twice as capable in animation as the Desire (check out clip on Youtube comparing it to nexus and desire).
    – DLNA. Seriously folks, this phone is a NAS box in your pocket. I have a Class-N network at home. This not only connects to WPA2/AES secured networks, but over a good (n-class) connection will stream video from a NAS box OR FROM THE PHONE to any working media client. I have tested it successfully with WD NetHD, PS3, Xbox 360 and Zyxel PMA1100. This is fantastic.
    - Battery life is getting steadily better. At first I wasn’t too impressed, but now a week later, it runs almost 40 hours of normal operation without needing to see a wall plug. As the battery level gets critical it shuts down access to non-essential applications (media player etc) so you can still make calls. I made a good ten minutes of calls to my wife (rare, I know!) with the battery critical. She loved it and I was impressed.
Seriously folks, this is a no brainer right here. If you’re a sheep and want to follow the Iphone 4 head, go ahead and do it. If you are interested in actually owning a device that can fulfil most technical tasks and don’t mind digging a little deeper to find out (and if you’re reading this site, you should be), then get the Galaxy S. The Desire is good. The Galaxy S is better"

You can pick up a Galaxy S for free from Dialaphone for £20 a month on an 18 month contract with O2. Admittedly, the allowance is crap, but you can always stick a different sim in, as dialaphone phones tend to be unlocked.

*sigh* Please don't try to act like a smartass. Maybe do some research before you do your fail of an attempt?

Now we go on to this being a no-brainer. The look of a phone is very important nowadays, as is the UI. If you mean 40 hours of straight use, that's a lie. If you mean 40 hours before it gets to critical battery with average use, then that isn't particularly good.

64GB of RAM is completely unheard of in this day and age.
Dialaphone order phones directly from the network, therefore they are not unlocked.

Okay, now let's move on to the reasons why you should get an iPhone 4:
The Retina display looks stunning. The App Store. The 1GHz A4 Chip. Mobile Safari It can actually fit in your pocket, good luck with fitting the Samsung Galaxy S If you jailbreak your iPhone, which is perfectly legal, you get into realms of Open Source third party apps and many people to help. You don't have this kind of thing with Android.

    Nothing wrong with LG.

I have the LG Max {Eve} and for an android it is a fab phone...agree the tocco is naff though as all they have had is complaints and bad reviews....I also have the Pop as my 2nd phone but the max is defo better for an android.

It all depeneds on what you want from a phone, you will get lots of replies arguing cases for certain phones ie the IPhone, HTC and blackberries....I have had a blackberry, and i have the android and im wanting the iphone ...

I had the LG GD900 Crystal and it was the biggest heap of cack I've had the misfortune to own. I've heard the same about just about every other LG model (cookie and Viewty being the ones most moaned about)

At least my Tocco still works!

Whilst I think the iPhone is a beaut I have to pull you on the apps...the majority of apps are free for the Android anyway.

I'd get the HTC Desire given the choice....only cos it is cheaper though...I agree that the iPhone wins on looks.

Whoops you were doing so well before you screwed it up.....

Didn't want to carry on the iPhone v Android debate because it could go on forever but someone who doesn't know what's what could easily make a wrong choice based on your extremely incorrect post.
Have you seen the screen of the Galaxy S? I haven't but to quote a mobile phone review site "probably the best smartphone screen out there."
Android App store is as good as if not better than Apple's app store.
The desire and Galaxy S both run on 1GHz chips so why should people get an iPhone 4 over the Desire for that reason? The chips are even built on the same framework.... ;)
Mobile Safari what? Genuine qurestion - do Apple to allow you to have an option of web browsers or are you only allowed Safari?
Size = Galaxy S is only 7mm taller, 6mm wider and .2mm thicker, hardly massive.
If you jailbreak your iPhone you void the warranty... end of.

Oh and where you really, REALLY fall down = "you get into realms of Open Source third party apps and many people to help. You don't have this kind of thing with Android."

just a few opinions on some points. safari browser is a joke wrt flash based websites which is most websites. loads of times i access the same websites without probs while iphones show various bits of a webpage with a notice saying to download a nonexistant plugin for flash.

4" isnt that big it certainly is pocketable. if i can pocket my 4" archos then a sleeker galaxy s wont be a problem. see the video it isnt that much bigger than the iphone.

there are enough threads online about the legality / illegality of jail breaking iphones and the violations of apples T&Cs there of.

you can root a android phone which is legal certainly but will void the warranty. it gives super user access to extra features. loads of extra stuff available on xda developers forum among many others.

the A4 chip is no match in video tests, see enough videos online for frame rates etc and polygons processing .... the galaxy s does about 90million polygons while the iphone does about 24million. see videos available online.

signal strength is an issue too. while there was a diagnostic menu on the 3gs, this file has been removed from OS4 and there is no way of accurately assessing the signal strength other than guessing from the fudged signal bars of the iphone4. remember this setting was there on the 3gs and has been removed from OS4 so that one cant have any way of accurately measuring the actual signal strength on the iphone4 for ordinary users. but some have devised work around.

most new android phones have natively access to the diagnostic mode or equivalent on android where one can accurately see the actual RAW signal strength in dBm and ASU readings. some may even show the signal to noise ratio. you dont need prizes for guessing why the diagnostic menu present on 3gs was deleted on IOS4.

the external antenna like on the iphone4 is well known for signal deterioration. old phones had external antennas and the reason newer phones got internal antennas was because of the signal interference problem. iphone4 went back to a decades old antenna design!

both may have front facing video cameras, but iphone4 is very limited to facetime and that too only on wifi, while samsung galaxy s can work on GSM/3g or wifi and one is not limited to just an iphone approved app, one can use that video camera for any app. anyway it is not a new feature, i had used video calling on three network in 2003 on the mobile network calling another phone rather than just on wifi like on the iphone 7 years later now.

the navigation feature is far superior on android, have you even tried the latest google voice navigation. see videos online. i can tell you google navigation is faster on gps latching on and more accurate than even my year old tomtom maps on my tomtom730T. dont take my word for it, see this months pcpro magazine and they have done detailed tests on various satnav devices and google navigation trumped in all 5 categories compared to all other navigation devices. i can just speak into the microphone and give a vague adddress and it gets me there i dont need to know the exact address as google search figures it out. streetview on the navigation is without par even and tomtom is no match at all as there is no comparable feature on it.

the iphone4 is good but it certainly is not the best in my opinion. every phone has its limitations but the present crop of android smartphones (atleast the latest top of the line ones) are equal if not more than a match for iphones.

see videos on google goggles on android. ofcourse there will be many more apps on itunes but most stuff that one needs will have alternates on android. one just needs one pizza finding app and one doesnt need a hundred varieties of pizza finding apps!

one feature the iphone will be better is proxy support. but there are workarounds for android too although i havent tried them as i dont need that feature.

the galaxy s is bigger but it is also a lot lighter than the iphone4.

iphone4 isnt actually proper multitasking yet.

    see some videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HODhXCfcf4c&NR=1

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0BMBiYEKVE

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_bguTIQEvw&NR=1

last but not the least, dont forget the antenna issue of the iphone and signal drops. read a more techy analysis from anandtech or gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/5576839/wireless-expert-on-iphone-4-antenna-problem-tests-we-got-a-problem or SEE THIS detailed ANALYSIS http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review/2

see the third video above which is a lengthy assessment. small is not always the most ergonomic to hold!

last but not the least, having more and more features may look great on paper but is it actually useful for the general public???? take for example the screen multitouch feature. one need a balance between multitouch and functionality. the desire screen is actually dual touch (two point sensitivity) but there is an axis inversion problem on the y axis as shown in some tests but not an issue for general use of the phone as majority of us will never use more than two fingers on a screen the size of 3.7 inches. the iphone is 11 point multi touch but is anyone ever going to use 10 fingers and their nose all at one time on a 3.7inch screen????? the samsung galaxy s is either 16 point multi touch or 64 point multitouch!!!! and there is no axis inversion issue on the y axis. but is anyone ever going to use anything more than two fingers on a phone screen????? in practise anything more than dual touch is just for technical tests and not any use for the end user. just like the megapixel game one sees on cameras, more is not always best or useful or an indicator of being better.

another useful thing to note, you take a glass sheet with a edge of steel and another glass sheet with a frame of plastic and drop it from waist height...... want to take any bets which glass has a higher risk of breaking??? just common sense. gorilla glass etc is mainly for scratch testing and not for break testing! glass whether treated or not is inately scratch resistant. see youtube videos of htc screen being drilled and knifed etc. practical things like how a phone faces drops are important as all of us will drop our phones accidentally at some time or the other and the risks of it breaking are much higher if the front and back is glass with a frame of steel, when compared to a front of glass with plastic around it !!!
