Wedding cancelled- what do I do about dress?

I should have got married on Friday but we cancelled it 6 months ago because we are struggling financially. I cancelled everything and lost all our deposits but must not have informed the bridal shop which had ordered my dress. The dress should have arrived in February but I received a phonecall 3 weeks ago to say it had arrived. If the wedding had been going ahead I would have been having a nervous breakdown about how late it was!!!! Anyway I was very stressed when they phoned so I explained the situation and said I would be in touch. The dress is half paid for so we decided that I would collect it in a month or so as we will get married at some point. I emailed to let them know this then received a reply on the eve of my wedding stating that the dress should have been paid within 7 days of it arriving ( which I didnt know or remember being informed)They have demanded the money immediately.

Now I am really unsure where I stand. I no longer want the dress as it feels tainted and I had wanted to enjoy the experience of going for my first dress fitting with my family. I feel that has been spoiled and I no longer want to go back to the shop. Their timing was dreadful and I may be over sensitive but this has been a very distressing time for me. I also dont have the money to pay for the dress yet. I managed to get some overtime at work to pay the balance but now my roof is needing repaired urgently. I would rather spend the money on that.

Sorry for being so longwinded and waffling abit but I just dont know what I should do. I would really appreciate some advice

Thanks

  • You wont have any option but to pay it I'm afraid, If you dont want the dress then you cn ask them nicely if they will help you sell it on

I would do the same : explain that you do not have the money for the dress - ask the shop if they can sell it on for you and deduct what you earn from what they sell it for - and hopefully there might even be a little return to you. If not, and they sell it for less than the amount you owe, at least you will not have to find so much.

It's a sad story - and shows just how easy it is to get suckered into paying megabucks for just one day :(

    Good luck for the future.

SI just dont know what I should do.

I'm sorry if this comes off as harsh, my mother used to run a bridal wear shop, mostly out of love for the industry and seeing the look on girl's faces when they had their first fittings in the dresses of their dreams. Ten years later she couldn't wait to get rid of the business.

The amount of girls who 'changed their minds' and seemed to fail to realise they'd signed a contract with payment terms was astonishing, and the best part was that they failed to see what an impact the cost of a single unpaid dress had on the shop's finances for the rest of the month.

Your personal circumstances are unfortunate but are irrelevent to the fact that you paid for what is presumably a custom order and the goods have been received so you should pay for them. Did you sign some form of contract? If you no longer have a copy then call and ask for one.

Will your buildings insurance pay for the roof?

Morally? Pay for the dress and don't be suprised if they don't want to know if you suggest they sell the dress in the shop, thats more staff time and aggro for them.

It isn't the shop's fault that you changed your mind about getting married and also forgot to cancel your order. Why should they have to bear the cost ?

First, you don't have to spend alot of money to get married. You could have gone locally with a very pretty dress and just had family attend and then go out for a special meal.

Also, I know everybody is different, but my dress was the most thing on my mind, this is the day we dream of so the dress is the first thing I would have thought of having to cancel.

I agree with everyone on here, times are tight for most people, and I am sure bridal shops are finding it very tough as we are not long out of the recession.

If you dont want to pay, why should the shop want to pay and accept it? They ordered it in on your say so. I am sorry if I am coming across mean, but if the dress was taking its time and you were getting married you would have chased and something would have been done. So that part is irrelevant.

At the end of the day, you entered into a contract with the bridal shop, and you are now trying to renege on it. Don't be surprised if they start proceedings to recover the money that is due to them.

Why not pay off the dress, and then try to sell it on Preloved or Y&YW or Ebay, as a BNWT gown? What make is it?

I would RATHER spend my mortgage money on a Porsche Boxter S but I'm not sure my Building society would feel the same.

You ordered it - they provided it = pay up, in my book anyway.

Have you explained the situation to the shop, can you agree some form of payment plan with them. They might be agreeable to this, rather than having to chase you through the courts for the money.

If you don't now want the dress there are plenty of places you can sell it on.

This is a little late for the OP, but I'm seeing the benefits of wedding insurance here. ;)
