Can you get a 0% credit card for £1k over (say) 6 months. That way, as long as you paid off £166 every month, you'd not pay interest. Effectively spreading the cost over 6 months.

I'd not advise the pdsa if you need to lie to use them. Charities exist for a reason, this one is to stop pets being put down when the owners genuinely cannot afford the bills due to being on benefits (of course, that begs the question as to whether they should have pets which can be expensive but thats a whole different kettle of fish). If you lie and get your dog treated through PDSA you are taking away that treatment from another animal who IS eligible for help. What right do you have to do that? Thats simply not fair, let alone being illegal. If everyone did it, no animals who really needed it would get helped as everyone would just be claiming free treatment and taking the p!ss.

Re-visit your budget and re-jig it to find £166 per month over the next 6 months. Ask on the debt free board, and the moneysaving old style board for ideas on how you could find that amount.

Sorry if the above sounds harsh, its just how I see it.
Thanks for your advice, as i said i have thought of the implications of using the pdsa, but my conciense (spelling?) has prevented me from pursuing this, which is why i set up this thread for other mse's words of wisdom. i have so far worked out maybe doing some car boot sales and selling some small items in local rag (never had much profiteering with ebay).
Will def consider talking to the vet about paying in installments or getting a loan.

Thanks so far for all advice and a big wet kiss from floydy (yes, thats his name)!

How about advertising as a local dog walker? IIRC, thats not a bad £ per hour if you get a few to walk together. That way, you can get your dog to recoup some of the costs himself by sharing his walks!

I know it hard - I just want to cry reading this post!!
My GSD was hit by a car (hit and run) two weeks ago and severed her spinal column, we could have paid £3000 for her treatment but she was too active a dog and I could see too much pain in her eyes! She would have been housebound and incontinent and I gulp, couldnt do that.
    Sorry to bring that up.
Some vets do payment plans for treatment, we couldnt afford to pay our fees once she had been put down all at one so have paid it last month and this. I know it wasnt as much but there are vets out there that offer finance.

Sorry again and I wish you all the best of luck

Oh if I could have the chance again to see her well and happy I would do anything and everything I could think of.

    All the Best

    Sam :(

thanks for that sam, made me feel awful reading your story, for pet lovers everywhere they really are a big part of the family arent they?? Big hug to you!

Thanks for the idea, unfortunately he is on strict house arrest(advised by vet) until his op, feel awful leaving the house without him.
  • Just so others know, contrary to pdsa literature, if you do not have a pdsa hospital in your area, you will find it very hard to get the help they advertise is available for people on low incomes. The reason is that your pet has to be accepted at a private vets for them to undertake the work for the pdsa. But the private vets will not take you on when your pet is ill, cause they say it's pre-existing.And the payment from the pdsa to the private vets will not cover all the treatment necessary. My 8 yr old dog developed arthritis, and to be blunt no-one was interested. I was refused, even though we had all the requirements required by the pdsa scheme. We have to struggle to keep the dog on the required medication, but my dog means alot to me. I wish you and your dog all the best.

I read a thread similar to this last week and it finally spurred me on to get insurance for my cat (M&S). I can't offer you any advice but I hope it encourages people to get their pets insured..... you just never know what's around the corner :(

I hope your dog is ok :(
Just run, run and keep on running!

The PDSA will only cover up to £100 of outstanding monies owed to the vet following treatment so the vet is unlikely to be willing to go ahead on this basis.

Please phone your vet and be very honest and clear about what you can and can't afford. Some are far more understanding than others, some will arrange for you to pay it up and some won't let you do that. A lot will depend on how many clients have fleeced them by bailing out with unpaid bills. But until you discuss the matter openly with them they can't help you.

If your vet can't help you come to an arrangement or offer alternative treatment, then I would advise a loan but do think about whether you could perhaps raise a proportion of the cash yourself and so have less to borrow in the first instance.

I am hopeful that the vet will be able to offer some suggestions as regards treatment or payment, so do let us know how you get on. And maybe consider insurance follwing this incident!

Thanks for advice, will phone vets tomorrow.

we did pursue pet insurance a couple of years ago, but the monthly fees were really high, like 60 pounds, so we were put off. probably would equate to cost of op now. i hardly think we will be able to insure him after his op.
guess we ve got to bite the bullet and book him in for surgery.

Please keep any other suggestions coming, really appreciate them!!

I needed 1000 pounds urgently a while ago and found that an unsecured loan with Northern Rock was my best option. Just had a look for you and 1000 over 1 year (at 5.8%) is around 85 per month and over 2 years is 45 a month. The numbers seem a bit less daunting broken down like that. You can also make overpayments and settle early if you win the pools with no penalty.
    Just a thought....
    Good luck
I'd be heartbroken if anything happened to my little pooch.

    Thinking of you
    Rachel.
