I tried using nitromors and other variants, and by the time you've paid for all the stuff we found it cheaper to get our doors dipped, it also looked far better as well as less mess. For a lot of the stuff we used a hot air gun e.g the door frames, but you have to be careful not to burn the wood.0

Forgot to say Nitromors was good for removing paint from old tiled fireplaces, although trying to stop it getting on anything nearby and stripping that too was difficult.0

I'm a Nitromors veteran.
When we bought this house we were starry-eyed FTB's and lovingly/stupidly stripped EVERY door, sash window and skirting board
We used a combo of heat gun and Nitromors (which in hindsight is lethal stuff). I try not to think about the potential damage we have done to ourselves breathing in all that (not to mention lead in the paint )
Since then, we have seen the light and painted everything in white gloss and put uPVC windows :rotfl:
So, I would leave them for now then have them dipped when funds allow. Though according to a friend who is a restoration expert - they can warp when dipped......0 -
Our house was built in 1720's and has the originial sash windows and shutters! That is why we bought it because I loved them.
I still do but man oh man, they are draughty and as for paint - I think it is the paint holding them together. Same with the doors. I did get a quote for new windows (obviously PVC is not an option as it would devalue the house) and they are £1400 EACH! We have 9! So say no more about that.

Yeah Sarah, my sister got them and I agree they are very impressive.
We spoke to an estate agent about getting our house listed (it is a blip that it isn't already) He said that for the number of interested parties who would 'like' a listed house, there would be as many put off, so no point in listing but definately would reduce value if we didn't replace windows with the same jobbies except of course we can have double glazed glass, which will be an improvement re heat. However we wont even be contemplating any of that stuff for a few more years!LBM Feb 2010 £62,700 Total Debt Jan 11 [STRIKE]£49,403.84[/STRIKE] £47,530.32.

I hear ya! I have to say that much as I was against them, the uPVC windows are easier, cleaner, draught proof and stop the noise. We are renting this place out, so we had to get them really.
My friend is replacing hers with uPVc sashes - one at a time as they are £800 a pop!
Of course I love original features and we are in the process of buying a listed Georgian house with sash windows :wall:
I am going to be on this website for a loooooooooooont time0 -
They (the uPVC ones) are fabulous and very very good 'reproductions' but right now couldn't even afford to replace glass in one of what we have. LOL.
However one day we will have glorious windows and be warm - one day!
Good luck with the Georgian house buy!LBM Feb 2010 £62,700 Total Debt Jan 11 [STRIKE]£49,403.84[/STRIKE] £47,530.32.
