That is such a truthful message . How has it never occurred to me before?

Guru Shortbird.......I think I've got religeon.

I've been reading a lot lately and distilling ideas! On the American site, Unclutterer, there's a post about the Red Velvet Rope test. Imagine you're the doorman to your stuff: would you let it back in to your life? Are your possessions things you truly value? Do they fit? Do they flatter? Do they work? Are they in good enough nick to donate, or give to friends? If not, let them go.

Also, I've been reading Trash It or Treasure It, about your relationship to your stuff. And the most meaningful one - so far - for me was: do your possessions reflect who you are or who you used to be? (Or who you're trying to be but not quite succeeding? )And there was a lot of baggage tied up with that idea, as far as I'm concerned. :o

Go back to Hypno's posts (last diary) on buying from TM Lewin and rediscovering her wardrobe through adopting a healthier lifestyle... prime example. Clothes fitted, flattered, projected the right work image and were either bought via MSE methods or "shopped" from her own wardrobe...:D

Morning all! A few things to think about:D

    Hi Hypno,

that's what I did:D. Run the half marathon last september with my best friend and it was lovely catching up:rotfl:.good luck!

You can run and talk at the same time? (insert confused smilie here) You make me feel SO unfit, walking and talking is a workout for me :rotfl:

Now this capsule wardrobe thingy, I've been wondering what it consists of? I have elderly favourites, and until now I've been almost proud of myself. I've bought a lot of clothing disasters in my time, but some things I still love more than 20 years down the line :D I still love a long mans jumper that I wore when pregnant with DD (she's 23 now). And do T-shirts go out of style? (well perhaps baggy/tight/cap sleeves......)

So what should I be thinking of as a capsule wardrobe then? A colour scheme so everything goes with everything else?

I got my ideas from places like this:

    http://mycapsulewardrobe.com/page2.htm

Then made a list of the areas in my life that I need clothes for eg:

    work
    casual
    sport
    accessories
    underwear

and built my capsule list from there, with things that can cross over into other categories where possible - eg some of my work shirts look fab with a pair of jeans for smart casual wear, likewise, some plain t-shirts in bold colours look good with jeans, but also work under a dark work suit.....

I have to say, it has worked really well for me over the last few months. I do still have a range of sizes, as I have lost weight, but over the summer, as I gain confidence of staying at my new weight, I will pass on some of my bigger stuff rather than keeping it "just in case".....as all that does is tell me that it will be ok to lose control of my eating again :o

It is all quite an emotional thing at times - we think that clearing out is just a clear out of "things" but actually it involves a whole lot of soul searching at times!

    Right, off for my shower.....

Memory Girl's thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/35495773#Comment_35495773 has the concept of "Gokking" which refers to Mr Wan's book. I think it's a core of clothes where everything goes with everything else in such a way that you have a large number of outfits, instead of lots of pieces that only have one possible way of going together.

But, while you're doing it, you have to let go of the " I spent how much on this and it didn't change my life" mindset!

I have clothes from ages ago too. I am being forced to buy trousers soon, as the pairs I have been wearing are worn out...but I hate shopping for trousers because of the stupid cuts there are now. I like trousers that are on the waist not half way off my hips yuck! And often the tags don't say what style they are either, so you have to go around measure zip length.... you can tell i don't like doing this don't you.

Chev I have the most fabulous black slim leg trousers from Sandwich - they are fantastic. However they are also DONE! They are over ironed and over washed. They were expensive - £80 at outlet - but they owe me nothing - I must have worn them 200 times. I dumped them after work on Friday because I had to accept when I looked in work mirror - these trousers are knackered. And I just dread trying to find new ones, so I feel your pain.

However, Gap are doing the Gap Pants this season and there are 5 different styles - haven't looked myself but might be worth a looksie.

re Clothes and I am not worth it - that rings a few alarm bells with me - must have a ponder about that!

It is interesting how many of us have the same issues - ie putting ourselves at the bottom of the pile when deciding what is worth spending money on (either necessarily or as a treat) yet I am sure we have all justified spending money on others as being totally unavoidable!

On to the declutter progress - I have done some more sorting for the garage, and have a car boot full for the tip, which I will take after lunch, and have three big boxes sorted for the charity shop, plus another batch of Dad's clothes that I found which have been either put straight in the bin, or in a pile for the wash before they too go in the pile for the charity shop.

Unfortunately, the charity shop piles will have to stay in the garage until next Saturday because they are not open for donations on a Sunday, and I am back at work every day this week......but once those boxes etc are gone on Saturday, there will be a huge difference in there.

Am getting there! Now for coffee and a bit of ginger cake for lunch :D

The Not Worth It bit is true here too. I got in a rut of office clothes that were old or cheap as we were not customer facing. Now I am S/E I have different images to project and although my suits were cheap as bought in the sales they fit better and make me feel good.

But I bought my first capsule piece yesterday, a sage green long belted shirt from Jane Norman - £30 but well worth it for smart or casual.
