Does this sound too antagonistic as a birth plan? (And have I missed anything important out?)

If you think I state things which should not need to be explicitly stated, I agree. However, based on my previous birth I believe it is necessary.

No debate about my birth plan. Notes detailing my reasoning are available if required.

I am planning to have a homebirth.

My husband, daughter and doula will be present within the house and at times within the same room as me.

Any other people should only enter the room where I am labouring with my express consent.

I will eat and drink as desired.

No vaginal exams.

No electronic monitoring.

No amniotomy.

No episiotomy.

Birthing position to be chosen by me - please do not force me to give birth on my back.

I will push when I choose - nobody should be telling me when to push or shouting at me to push.

Low lights at the time of birth unless bright lighting is clinically indicated.

Low voices - especially no shouting.

Baby to be caught by me. (If I am in an unsuitable position to do so, baby may be caught by my husband or midwife and given to me ASAP - baby does not need to be weighed first.)

I will breastfeed.

I want to have a physiological third stage:

• no syncometrine
• no cord clamping or cutting
• no controlled cord traction

Vitamin K only to be administered in the event of an instrumental delivery.

Elle - Katie had a phase of this I ended up trying randomly pressing combinations of buttons until it flipped back. I'll get my thinking cap on though to see if I can remember.

Katie is in the land of nod ready for tomorrow I made sure she didn't have a proper nap this afternoon plus an extra long bath, it was a record tonight DH was downstairs within 5 minutes of putting her in bed!

Car is stripped of all visible valuables ready for being left in the station car park too, bag is packed, Katie's outfit is chosen, just need DH to iron mine then I'm sorted apart from a shower.

It's about 4 hours from where we are (20 mins from M/cr Airport) to South Wales, 2/3 hours over to York, about 4.5 hours to Devon.

York also has the advantage of being fairly close to the North East should you wish to prove you aren't a builder called Dave to a few more people...

That;s fine and straight forward Susan, I think it you have an understanding midwife then it wouldn't be seen as antagonistic...

Do you have a back up plan in case of emergency?

Susan, I think it's a very comprehensive plan and that's a good thing. It reminds me a bit of when that band in the 80s had a part of their rider saying they needed a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones taken out - it wasn't because they were divas but because they had lots of complicated pyrotechnics on stage, and if the venue hadn't read their specifications closely enough to know to pull out the brown M&Ms they couldn't be trusted to have set up to the safety specifications.

I'm seriously considering York but am now wondering if right before Christmas is a bad time.

I'm not sure what to put about emergencies. Last time I put in provision that preferences could be ignored in the event of an emergency but I feel that that just gave them carte blanche to ignore whatever they wanted. Last time of the 14 statements on my plan, seven were ignored. Of the seven which weren't, two were provision for circumstances which didn't arise, one was that OH would be present, one was about what pain relief I would consider and one was agreement to a standard procedure.

Actually that reminds me, I haven't put in that I'm actually above average weight. How does this sound?

Although I have no particular plans to use any drugs during labour and birth, please note that despite being thin, I am not below average weight as I am much taller than average.

Susan, sounds very thorough. If you're employing a doula, a large portion of their job would be to make sure your birth plan is adhered to as much as possible, so I would try and relax about it all a bit. Plus being at home generally decreases all forms of intervention and the "cascade", so that should help too.

All you TTC/newly-pregnant lot are making me soooooo broody!

Susan - what about having a second page as back up, that would only come out in the event of an emergency?

:rotfl: I love cunning little tests like that.

I've been thinking about my birth plan for three years (and writing some of the supporting information for almost as long).

Is there anything in particular that might make York a problem at that time of year? My brother used to live in York so depending on what it is, I might be able to ask him. (I think SM used to live in York too unless I just completely made that up.)
