Babies can choke on things they can pick up. If they don't chew it properly, it can become lodged in their throat. I gave Holly half a chip against OH's wishes, and she properly choked on it (how bad did I feel!). I had to unstrap her from the highchair and lean her forward and slap her back. She chokes on things all the time, but this was proper full on "couldn't breathe" choking.

And there was a case in the news last month where a baby died from choking on a bit of sausage that the babysitter gave him against his mother's advice.

I don't have one of those feeders and have no opinion on them at all, but just want to clarify that it is perhaps easier than you think for a baby to choke despite having a gag reflex.

confuzzled - I read somewhere that rocking backwards and forwards gently during/after having a wee makes the baby change position slightly so can help you to get more out. I used to do it before bed and it seemed to work :)

Well, my little boy was sat in daddy's lap as he (daddy) was eating an apple. Alfie was properly reaching out to it, open mouthed so DH let him take it. He was ever so upset when it was taken back off him so I cut him off a large chip sized piece and he sat happily munching on it for ages (cue tantrum if you tried to take it off him  ) Then DH drank some of a can of coke, and again we had reaching out for it and a major strop when he wasn't allowed it!!!!

(Following the chocking conversation I would like to point out that I kept a very close eye that no bits were bitten off!)

Oh dear, poor Holly! Suppose it just happens sometimes, eh?

Sj, even if he had bitten some off it prolly would've been fine or gotten spit back out again :)

Sami, oh dear! The way Finn flings about, i'm surprised he hasn't done that to one of us!

The damn cat just bought a mouse in! I see him come in with something in his mouth, and realised in was a mouse. In shock i shouted "He's got a mouse!" and he ran away.

DH made me go and find him as he hates animals (wuss). I found Jools with the mouse... in my shoe! _pale_

He was also sick again *sigh*
