Gill, here is a great place to start: http://babyledweaning.blogware.com/blog/GettingStartedFingerFoodBasics/FingerFoodBasicsMonth1 . But one of the basic tenets of BLW is not starting too early - baby needs to be able to sit up fairly independently and be able to grasp food and put into its mouth by itself - all of which usually doesn't happen until 6 months, so usually BLWers are also ones who wait until the 6 month mark.
You can 'do' whatever you please! I know MFD did a mix of BLW and spoon-fed. If you want to stick to the principle of BLW but mix in some cereals and purees, I think the usual practice is to put the stuff on a spoon and then give spoon to baby to feed to themself - which keeps with the general philosophy that the baby is still self-feeding. We do this for things like yoghurt and oatmeal. Don't worry about how much they're eating in the early days as babies still get the majority of their nutrition from milk until they are 1 year old.
(I don't really see the point of baby rice if you're doing BLW, to be honest...the whole point of it for me was so I didn't have to mess with that sort thing!! Plus, it's not very tasty or appetising for the baby! If you want to avoid wheat at first, you can use things like rice cakes or make your own oaty flapjacks.)top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

Gill we do a combination of BLW and mashed/jar foods. For dinner tonight Molly had a bunch of veg sticks (courgette, potato, aubergine, cauliflower), some chicken pieces, some roughly chopped chicken and noodle in thick broth and half a jar of broccoli risotto.
Giving them purees shouldn't interfere with BLW and you can be sure they're getting some solids into them, but if they're used to wielding their own spoons it can be hard to convince them to let you feed them so things can get messyOrganised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

Thanks for this. I'm not intending starting for sometime yet but just want to get reasearching/preparing.
MFD - I would love to hear your experiences if you have time, no rush as he's only 3 months old.
If I need to start early for hunger reasons (he's a big tall boy!) would it be feasible to do baby rice and then move onto BLW or would that just confuse/mess things up?Mummy to Thomas born April 27th 2010 8lb 5oz0 -

Would you feed her the puree or let her do that bit herself too?Mummy to Thomas born April 27th 2010 8lb 5oz0 -
We did something quite similar Gill, I wanted to be sure she was getting some solids because she was clearly hungry but it was a week or so before I gave her chunks of anything to chomp on/wave around her head/bang on tables.
Edit: I normally feed her purees but if we're at home she has her own spoon and can dip.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

Gill - I did purees & stuff but very quickly introduce finger food as well.
He now tends to have a meal I feed him followed by finger food for pudding, or finger food followed by a yoghurt.A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

Sami - My DH was like that till we went to that talk, and now he's worst than me.... but he's much more of the "Im right your wrong" mentality. I've explained to him countless times that some people have a different take on the information, but he cant see how. Typical man - very much black and white, no shades of grey....
my skin has gone to pot, had a huge outbreak of exzcema (or however its spelt) on my elbows, knees and knuckles.... itches like crazy... just as well i have Dr's next week for check up....
btw what do they do at the six week check?
They did nothing at mine, they didnt even check my stitches
Aless - on the BLW thing, E can feed himself (either by picking it up or me giving him the spoon) and he's only 4 months old ETA I see you said usually 6 months lol doh
