this is going to sound like a very odd question but to any new first time mums/mums of one..... or anyone for that matter:

Does anyone else feel like they've haven't really got a clue what they're doing???

Yep, 8 months later, I feel like that most of the time :rotfl:. I have the odd moment when I think I have it all sussed but that never lasts :D

We've been having major problems settling D after feeds, to the extent I'm sure he's not getting nearly enough sleep I've found this really difficult and I feel a bit useless not being able to do something as "straight-forward" as get my son to sleep! THIS coupled with the fact that he had a virus that landed him in the local children's hospital this week, just compounded everything and I felt as clueless as I could be! That said, after a couple of nights in hospital and him being more settled, I got a bit more confident with him, though he's back to being a pain to get to sleep again.

    Totally awesome name :D

Although it does not appear to be a name linked with good sleep as my David is not exactly well known on this board for any lengthy sleep :rotfl:

Sorry if that turned into a bit of a ramble, I suppose what I'm saying is I do feel totally clueless too, but I'm beginning to think it's just part and parcel of parenthood!

That's exactly what it is!! Oh and congratulations!! :D It's nice to see more of the ladies from the pg thread who were due after me over here too.

It took me a while to feel better about not knowing what I was doing, and then pretty much as soon as I did that I then felt as though, actually, I do know what I'm doing after all!

I think it was the wise MFD who said that you'll realise that you do know what you're doing when someone else tells you something and you know they're wrong. Eg they'll say "oh I think he's hungry" and without a second thought you'll be thinking "no, actually, he's tired"

She might have worded it better than me though lol :rotfl:
  • Hiya CAFCGirl and ET and ajaney,

We have all had the same thoughts about not knowing what to do for the best and worried about giving baby stimulation, giving baby too much stimulation, feeding too much, too little and sleep is a constant source of anxiety on the thread. It is perfectly normal.

I will repeat my 6 week mantra for you - round about 6 weeks babies begin to change, you start to get smiles and recognition and they begin to become more like little people and less like little parasites!! They go on changing every 6 weeks or so and just as you get used to one thing and think that you are doing okay baby throws you another curve ball and you have to learn to do something else completely different.

TBH I don't think you can actually 'bond' with your baby until they start to give something back...which is at about 6 weeks.

I remember one of the developmental emails said that there is a reason that baby starts to recognise you and smile at 5 or 6 weeks and that is because it is about as long as any parent can cope with a newborn without getting something in return!!! I thoroughly recommend signing up to the babycentre emails and looking at the next few editions on their site if you want to have a clue what is coming up.

And remember - in 6 weeks time it will all be different (better) and you will have a whole new load of things to worry about.

Ask as many dumb questions as you want - it won't be more than I asked when Benjamin was teeny tiny!

    MFD xx
    Well done SJ :)

I'm going to have to wear the "bad mum" hat tonight I'm afraid. Izzy was too tired to go to bed properly, so her teeth are unbrushed and she is still in the slightly muddy dress she was playing in the allotment in earlier. So long as she has got changed before nursery tomorrow that is the main thing (she can save that for college like I did ;) ).

Nope, I have to be the owner of the 'bad mum' hat this evening. Benjamin and I were playing 'folding bedsheets' earlier (I waft it around and Benjamin gets over-excited running in and out of the sheet and laughing his head off) and Benjamin nose-dived though the sheet and whacked his face on the magazine rack :( He has a horrible red mark and bruise under his left eye. Bad mummy :(

Edit - LOL SJ - speak of the devil! I am glad someone listens to my ramblings!

    Evening!

Ladybird- I will FB you with the details of the photographer who did our shoot but she is in Basingstoke and only charges £40 for the shoot and all the pics on a disc.

CAFC- I totally agree with everyone else that feeling like you don't really know what you're doing is totally normal! Now, at eight months, I sometimes feel like I have things sussed, then something changes and I'm back to square one! I also have the 'What to Expect in the First Year' and I honestly haven't opened it since H was born. I don't see the point as I know H hasn't read it ;). We just muddle along, mostly doing what H wants to do, sometimes doing what I think we should be doing, mostly having fun and sometimes just trying to get through the day. I'm another who enjoys babies much more once they are actually doing things. I found the early weeks pretty lonely as baby is pretty unresponsive. Now my baby boy is tons of fun to be around, we play, we sing and we laugh together and I (mostly) really enjoy his company.

Tonight I am mostly printing ebay postage labels and it is boring!

    thanks to all of you....

dont get me wrong, im very happy with Landen, and we're all doing ok. I just want to keep up with what he needs/could benefit from, but I dont really know where he's at developmentally....

such as how long should he be holding his own head for? i should really buy a book/ learn how to use google more effectively LOL

I found myself comparing E to books and other babies and had to force myself to stop lol cos all babies are different, E had a very strong neck from when he was born but has only just started being able to really hold his head up when he has tummy time and he is 19 weeks (I remember seeing a pic of Lily from weeks ago and she was holding her head up fab and I though why cant E do that yet, but then thought forget about it lol he will do in his own time and now he is I hope that makes sense lol) and he did other things sooner than "they" say like smiling and laughing for example, and following people around the room etc with his eyes

When E was L's age he did nothing it was boring lol, he basically cried, fed, slept lol, he now loves his bouncer chair, loves his mat, loves being naked on the floor and is generally a cute and happy baby :)

Well E has been in bed since 7pm, but hasnt been fed since 5pm so I am going to attempt a dream feed when we go to bed at half 9 (yes I love going to bed early lol)

Oops! He will heal. Izzy aquired a grazed elbow at some point today, but I'm not sure when it happened :o. She falls over so many times I just tell her to get up again (I do give her a cuddle if she needs one though!), so it could have been any of them!

    And Ta GISI :)

Just having a second helping of my veg (I cooked something with half a pattypan squash ... and a baby aubergine that needed using up, and it is yummy!) then I'm off to bed. Jury service starts tomorrow, and if I do get called onto a case I don't want to be falling asleep in court :rotfl:.

Thanks for the welcomes/hugs/hellos. It has been a fairly tough fortnight with his sudden unsettledness (his first week, he was a dream baby!) and hospital admission (was only about 36 hours total but felt like an eternity!) but I think I'm finally just letting things do whatever they're going to do and feeling a lot better for it. That, and I have a few issues with the care we got in hospital/in the days after the birth that I'm dealing with but that's a whole other story!

    Totally awesome name :D

Although it does not appear to be a name linked with good sleep as my David is not exactly well known on this board for any lengthy sleep :rotfl:

haha, he got the name from his dad, he's about the 4th or 5th David in a line of them! Thankfully, it's a nice name! Here's hoping both of them decide that sleep is a good idea sometime soon :)
That's exactly what it is!! Oh and congratulations!! :D It's nice to see more of the ladies from the pg thread who were due after me over here too.

Thanks :) it's been nice to see some familiar "faces" too - this place moves so quickly! Oh well, I suppose I learnt to keep up with the pg thread, I'll get my head around this one eventually!
