Not just Jeremy Vine's fault to be fair - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-10631092
Oh my lord - what a stupid piece of research that is. If a baby is born in 1/3 of the day it is 1/3 more likely to survive.
Since when did hospitals work 'office hours' anyway? Is 9-5 actually a shift for any care professional?
What a load of b0ll0cks.
And Bruno - I think defending one sensationalist BBC report with another sensationalist BBC report is scandalous too
It only applies to Scotland anyway...about time we got the better end of something down hereplease listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -
By the way, many thanks for all the advice regarding Amelie's swimming.
After talking to DH last night, I rang the sports centre and I've asked for her swimming teacher to ring me. I think perhaps it's best for me to see what she thinks about it and make sure that I'm not making a mountain out of a molehill. If she sees this sort of thing all the time and just thinks she come along in her own time, then I may just stand back and see what happens....Working hard in the hopes of being 'lucky'

Sadly mental health care is often an office-hours kind of deal. The duty psychiatrists are frequently new hires doing their bit to work their way up and as such are a bit less experienced. They're still qualified - but they tend to just triage till the team can make a decision in the morning.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

I wouldn't dare disagree with you SS but if we are talking about Midwives and Anaesthatists and Nurses and 'hands on physical carers' (for want of better phrasing) then they work shifts and shift changovers (certainly for the nurses and other medical professionals I know) are not office hours - shifts start at 6am or 8am and then at intervals throughout the day.
You know me, I get very wound up about these 'studies' and the reporting of them which is usually to pick out one or two sensationalist points and blow them out of proportion and then the whole country has a big knee jerk reaction without actually considering the bigger picture.
Before you know it we will all be told to cross our legs until 9am and then there will be queues at the maternity wards and then there will be even more uproar...

I think you're right to be annoyed by dodgy reporting - it's incredibly annoying and very irresponsible. I was just pointing out that some types of healthcare genuinely are less good outside of office hours.
Would you mind taking my proper name out of your post please? :AOrganised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

I think you're dead right to be angry - it's infuriating to me that mental healthcare is almost universally crap during the night and over holidays when these are peak times for people to be in the most need of help. And it reflects the wider attitude towards mental health - it's just not taken as seriously in many ways and in many NHS budgets because the people who genuinely are in direct danger can be put out of harm's way till the morning. But that's still up to 14 hours where the duty psychiatrist might feel out of his or her depth with a crisis patient, which puts excessive strain on her/him, and where the patient is just locked up with someone who's probably showing signs of discomfort and therefore even more convinced that they're losing the plot and should just be left to get on with things
Crap reporting also makes me  Like the statistics yesterday - 8 out of 10 women want to breastfeed or start out that way but 1 in 5 is still doing it at whatever age they said. Lowest Common Factor, bastages - don't smudge a genuine problem with shoddy statistics.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

How did the presentation go?
Good, one of our big bosses coming to tell whats going on with our bit of the company and then generally UK wide. Talking about what new contracts coming up etc... bit long (1¾hrs) but interesting as well. Not just Jeremy Vine's fault to be fair - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-10631092
Thanks Bruno you got there before me...
Sorry I like Jeremy Vine especially as he has Martin on his programme as well.....Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.0 -

I ranted about the lowest common denominator yesterday!!
I thankfully have little knowledge of mental healthcare but it sounds terrible.
Sounds very similar to other industries though. I know of several would-be teachers who went through all the necessary academia only to be hurled into a bad school and given the worst classes which has resulted in them abandoning their chosen profession.please listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120
