I presume they sell them on to a textile recycling company, the recycling company can either use them as cleaning rags or break down the rags and reclaim the fibres.

Round these parts the name is a bit of a con, given that they wont actually take rags or bones, just scrap metal.

I'm a plumber and heating engineer so i'm used to them. I have many of there business cards. I call it "dial-a-!!!!!". :)
If I remove a boiler or rads I always use them as it's not worth the effort to weigh in the scrap. Copper and brass is a different story....

I normally leave it all until the last day of the job and if it hasn't disappeared by then I will call one of them. The record so far ....... from boiler off the wall to taken by the local passing !!!!! = the time it takes to make a cup of tea! The customer was shocked and even I was surprised. A couple of hours is usual in built up areas. 1 or 2 days in other areas.

    Mmm....why can't I say p1key without censorship?

I live in North Birmingham and we have about 4 of these that come round on various days during the week.

I too am sick of the noise they make.

The trick is to make them believe that they are stealing it. Somehow this makes it more attractive to their miniature brains.

You can play pranks too. Computers and TV's with no innards is a good one.

Many years ago, a friend who ran a TV repair business used to occasionally leave out useless old TV's in new boxes. He stacked them up to look like a delivery ... all gone in the morning.

Yeah Iv'e heard of that before, might give it a try and see if I'm one of the lucky ones!:rotfl:

It's quite handy sometimes - saves a trip to the tip with the broken stuff and the electrics that the charity shop can't take. Only problem is they drive by so fast that by the time you realise they're there, they've reached the top of the street. I'm surprised anyone gets there in time!

How very true been trying to catch one for three weeks now to take old machine machine. Local council charge £15.

Still they must be very honest cos its been sitting in the front garden, I would have been very pleased if they had took it.

  • The ones that come round here are dead cheeky. One of them collected an old oven but he filled it with bricks and rubble from our garden.. Apparently when they get to the scrappies they just weigh the truck and give them the scrap value of the weight. Obviously the bricks etc make it heavier.
Some folk know all the tricks.
