Bloody Rag and Bone men

Twice a day they are round my street now, and irritatingly they now have tannoys and loudspeakers. 8pm tonight one of them is round announcing his presence with an air horn and now this one asks for everything from scrap metal to mobile phones!!

What happened to the good old days of a bloke in a van that came once a week and shouted.

End rant.

Same round my way as well - a year ago they were nowhere to be seen and now they're multiplying like rabbits. Started at 8am the other day which I was seriously unimpressed by. I didn't think the scrap metal prices had gone up that much.

I thought these guys packed up years ago when they used to come round with a horse and cart(not steptoe) Got my 1st goldfish that way.

Certainly around here they went quiet, then have really appeared daily now for the last 6 months.

I have no objection to them doing that, fair enough its their living, but what really irks me is the tannoy and air horns. I did think earlier as he sat at the end of the street reeling off the ever growing list of crap they take how tee'd off I'd be if I worked nights.

I have no idea what a rag and bone man is:eek:! Other than Steptoe & Son

Well, I gather they are looking for others junk but never in my life have I seen this:o.

Do most people not sell their 'junk' on now or freecycle it - surely there's not much for these - jezz can't think of what to call them - to take from other then the really bad stuff that nobody wants!

Rag bone is probably an outdated term, more scrap metal. Mine asks for:
metal, washers, hoovers, TV's, Video's, Mobile Phones, Cars(!), computers and laptops to name but a few.

Never in my years have I had somebody come around to my area and ask for this. Charity bags yes but never a person looking for scrap:eek:

Same round my way too. They'd been coming round for a while but during the run up to the election they got a PA fitted which is really loud and really annoying. It started with the guy on the mic but now they play that old "any old iron" song at god knows what volume.

It's quite handy sometimes - saves a trip to the tip with the broken stuff and the electrics that the charity shop can't take. Only problem is they drive by so fast that by the time you realise they're there, they've reached the top of the street. I'm surprised anyone gets there in time!

Jeepers, it sounds like our Ice-Cream van:rotfl:.

Do these guys come and collect in vans? I take it they resell the scrap metal? I recently read on here that gutter grates are stolen and sold for scrap!?!?

Yep, small flatbed trucks. They do resell. The old fella down the road who runs a mini skip business has had things stolen out of his yard a few times, all items with scrap value.
