Whenever I see someone has posted the Rainbow Bridge poem, I skip by and won't read it. I was sent it via email a few years back, when we lost one of our pet rats. It had me in buckets of tears, and since then, my experience of losing beloved pets has only been added to, so I just cannot read it

I have been through it twice with my beloved dogs, and i always say this to others, which is what i came to realise myself at the time.

Better that you suffer the pain of losing them because you care, than they suffer pain because you don't.

The ones that have loving ,caring and unselfish owners at the end of their lives that have to make that hardest decision are definitely the lucky ones,as Madget says.

You don't even take him seriously,
How am I going to get to heaven?,
When I'm just balanced so precariously..

I haven't recently but 5 years ago we had to let our cat go, she was 21 and we had had her since I was a small child, she was a funny little thing, not sociable with anyone at all ... except me! She'd sleep on my bed, curl up on my lap etc etc. She truly was me special little girl and even thinking about her now upsets me.

Try to find soem comfort in the knowledge that you are doing this for all the right reasons, she suffering and will be so much happier wherever she may go to. Someone on another website I use posted this recently, I thought it was lovely....

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... "

That has just made me cry :-( My hubby took him to be put to sleep this afternoon. His health hadn't improved so we decided the best thing would to end his suffering. Funnily before i went to work i looked at him and his eyes almost said please help me! I almost feel relieved that he is now at peace even tho i would do anything for him to be here now. Thankyou all for your nice kind words. This is the first time i've had to been through this and i will never forget my lovely boy :-)) x

Of course you won't forget him.But in time youi will recall all the funny things he did,and be able to smile at his photos. All our loved animals hold a special place in our hearts for their devotion and unconditional love. They are not around for very long compared to ou.r time on this earth, and i like to think that is so we can give our love to several animals in that time.

Here is another poem i found that may give you comfort in the days to come.

    Four Feet in Heaven

Your favorite chair is vacant now...
No eager purrs to greet me.
No softly padded paws to run
    Ecstatically to meet me.
No coaxing rubs, no plaintive cry
Will say it's time for feeding.
I've put away your bowl, and all
    The things you won't be needing;
But I will miss you little friend,
    For I could never measure
    The happiness you brought me,
    The comfort and the pleasure.
And since God put you here to share
    In earthly joy and sorrow;
I'm sure there'll be a place for you
    In Heaven's bright tomorrow

Can't remember who originally posted this but it always makes me cry. I know what you are going through however take comfort from the fact that you did what was right for you beloved pet, thats the least any caring owner should do.

    Dog's Legacy

When humans die, they make a will
To leave their homes and all they have
    to those they love.
I, too, would make a will if I could write.
To some poor wistful, lonely stray
    I leave my happy home,
My dish, my cosy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy.
The well loved lap, the gentle stroking hand,
    the loving voice,
The place I made in someone's heart,
The love that at the last could help me to
    a peaceful painless end
    Held in loving arms.
If I should die, Oh do not say,
"No more a pet I'll have,
to grieve me by it's loss"
Seek out some lonely, unloved dog
And give my place to him.
This is the legacy I leave behind -
'tis all I have to give.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

    Dear Vodkachick68,

I'm so sorry to read your post. I can say that I know exactly how you feel because my 16 year old cat was PTS yesterday afternoon under almost the same circumstances as your dear boy. She was given steriods about four weeks ago, they perked her up for a few days, but she went down hill from there and in the end I had to let her go.

I know how hard it is, but you did the right thing for your puss.

    Take care,

    May

Another poem that always cuts me up, it's about dogs but applies to any pet.

    The Power Of The Dog
    by Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
    From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
    Love unflinching that cannot lie--
    Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
    Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But...you've given your heart for a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
    With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!);
When the spirit that answered your every mood
    Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart for the dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long--
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett
