cat to be put to sleep

We've had to make the decision to put our 15 year old cat to sleep:( He hasn't been well on and off for the last few months. He has now stopped eating and drinking. He is not interested in doing anything execpt sleep. We took him to the vet yesterday to be put to sleep and she thought as a last attempt, to boost his steroids and gave him a double injection. He is still not responding today and i just feel he has no quality of life anymore. We are going to take him tommorow if there is no marked improvement. I just feel sooo gutted to be losing him as he is a big part of the family. I can't stop crying and i just want to know if anyone else has been through this recently. Thanks.

Not recently but in the past with cat and dog. I know what you are growing through and you will miss the cat for a long time but it gets better and you cope and go on.
Take some comfort it the fact your cat was loved and you gave it care and a good home.
I would personaly say goodbye to the cat outside the vet's treatment room, but you may feel differently about it.

Yes, I have done this (though not recently). You just know in your heart that it's the proper thing to do for the sake of your cat even if it also breaks your heart. If it goes ahead remember that it is the ultimate act of kindness that you are showing your cat, and that you are putting his feelings before yours. It is hard but you will get through this though naturally you are upset at losing your long term friend.0

I'm so sorry to hear your news. As SnowyOwl has said, you must remember that you are doing the kindest thing for your cat. It is his time to go, he's tired and has had enough - if he could speak, I'm sure he would tell you 'it's time, I'm ready'.
Love and hugs to you at this time, please if you can, let us know how you are.

Sorry to hear this and its probably for the best even though at the time you dont think so. Try and enjoy what little time you have with him.
I had this decision 2 years ago in end he died before taking him to vets to be put down, boy I still miss my boy
I got another cat now soon after and he isnt very well either not eating he is around 40 -
I had this 4 years ago with my old rescue pony. You will know its time by the light in their eyes not being there.
Take comfort in the fact that your beloved kitty won't be in pain any more. I cried non-stop for about a week (and having a pony put to sleep is quite a brutal thing sadly)
My ex hsuband had left about a month before and losing my Polly was 10 times worse for me than him going.
Big hugs to you! xxI have realised I will never play the Dane!
Where are my medals? Everyone else on here has medals!!

Unfortunatly,last September,my big lad Orbit went a few hours before I was going to take him to the vets to be pts.I had to get out of the house when he went,could'nt stay in,too many memories I suppose.
I went for a drive & found myself over at the ASSISI shelter,where I got Daisy from.Getting her so soon after Orbit's passing helped releave the pain big time,however it was weeks before I got over it.
You have my sincere sympathies at your loss.

I feel your pain, it has happened to me recently. This poem was given to me by my dear old ma and reading the words carefully helped me.
Weep not for me though I am gone;
into that gentle night.
Grieve if you will but not for long,
upon my soul's sweet flight.
I am at peace,
my soul's at rest.
There is no need for tears.
For with your love I was blessed;
for all those many years.
There is no pain,
I suffer not,
The fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts.
In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath;
remember not the strife.
Please do not dwell upon my death,
but celebrate my life.

I always ask myself what I would want if I were in my pet's situation. If the light has gone out in his eyes and he has no joy in life anymore, then you know what is the kindest thing to do.
Still, it's absolute torture going through all of this. My last time was two and a half years ago, but I still remember how it felt. Try and take comfort in the fact that it is the final and most loving kindness you can do for your cat. The old saying is true, thankfully: time does heal. That may not help at the moment, but it will in due course.
Remember that you have given a little cat a home, safety and lots of love. Sadly, not all are lucky enough to experience that - but you have made such a big and wonderful difference to your own little boy and I'm sure he would thank you so much for it if he were able.0 -
I haven't recently but 5 years ago we had to let our cat go, she was 21 and we had had her since I was a small child, she was a funny little thing, not sociable with anyone at all ... except me! She'd sleep on my bed, curl up on my lap etc etc. She truly was me special little girl and even thinking about her now upsets me.
Try to find soem comfort in the knowledge that you are doing this for all the right reasons, she suffering and will be so much happier wherever she may go to. Someone on another website I use posted this recently, I thought it was lovely....
"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... "
