I am so fed up with the cost of school trips. My DD has just handed me details of a trip next year for GCSE History students,£600 for a 5 day trip to Berlin. This does not even include travel on Berlin transport ,meals at lunchtime and obviously spending money so thats probably another £100.Our whole family could go away for a week for that.My daughter really wants to go but I object to having to pay so much money for a school trip.

give up work and:
a. save up your benefits (apparently people on benefits can holiday in the US and Cuba for 3 weeks at a time).
b. let the other parents pay for it or school fund it (at least that's what happens when waynetta's mum says she can't afford to pay).0 -
seriously though, that is a lot of money for a weeks trip - i'm sure a LOT of other parents are in the same boat as you.0

How old is your DD? If she is old enough what about telling her to get a paper round or a saturday job, if she really wants to go.
If she isnt old enough for that then say its half of her xmas/birthday present (or both) depending what she usually gets spent on her?£100 - £10,0000 -
My 3 kids get offered loads of trips costing the same. The deal is that they each can go on one of them from Years 1-13 and that's it! They think that's more than fair, so everybody's happy.
I'm currently trying to find the money for this month's instalment on a ski trip for my second daughter, which is costing a total of £670. Family are contributing to the cost for birthday and Christmas presents - every little helps!0 -
School trips have always been expensive, but whereas in general foreign holidays have fallen in price, school trips haven't. I don't mind if the trip is optional, but by calling it a GCSE trip there is pressure on parents to let their kids go.0

If you can't afford it tell her you'll take her for a weekend some time later in the year (if you have someone to look after your other kids!). You could get cheap Ryanair flights adn stay in a budget hotel, maybe £100-£200 all in for the two of you for a weekend.0

Its crazy isnt it, my son can you skiing or snowboarding in France in January for a pricely sum of £730 . Thankfully he didnt want to go, he did go on another trip though that cost £280 mon-friday at a outward bound centre but on free school meals it cost £20 . Guess who all got to go on that trip .
Looking at some other threads on here its seems that we all should just throw in the towel and go on the jsa, incapacity benefits etc... one family are getting £680 a week in benefits now that cant be right can it. Sorry rant over.....

When I was in school a few years ago they said a trip to France would be beneficial to us... I went and got !!!!ed most of the time. I don't see how a trip to Berlin will help with GCSE's anyway. Waste of time and money. (When she could be sat at home revising or on a BETTER holiday elsewhere).
Save your money, and if she REALLY wants to go, do as BexInLondon says. Just go later in the year and plan it yourselves. It's cheaper and she will most likely enjoy it more as there's no teachers breathing down her neck.0 -
i bet a lot of parents feel the same...phone up the school and ask to speak to relevant teacher...surely the subject matter can be covered in a cheaper wayonwards and upwards0

My DD had one the other week for a 4 Day trip to Italy, that was £700. I declined.0
