Sorry Tazinijif, but we cannot magic money out of the trees - any more than we can magic jobs out!

Get your partner's stuff packed up and stacked into your room- and rent out the spare room for the time being. There is no way that you can get another penny from the State - and let's face it, we know darn well how the economic situation is hitting everyone.

You have a job, your OH will get a job - cut down on the electric, live on beans on toast for a few weeks - you'll get there!

    Ebay?

Or depending how desperate you are, Cash Converters will happily take some of your OH's music equipment off him. They give you a price for it and you have the option of buying it back in 30 days time.
If you haven't collected it in those 30 days they'll sell it.

    Worth a look I suppose.

Sell of your possessions for a fraction of their worth to bleedin' pawnbrokers?

To be honest I think the OP wanted constructive advice.

What is the process for forcing someone to convert a student overdraft into a commercial loan? It's just an area that I'm not familiar with and could do with some enlightenment on this area.

It's a real shame that the OP felt that the posters on this thread were not complying with the 'be nice etiquette' but it's been equally frustrating to find out bit by bit that their main constraint is accommodation that's outside of their budget and that £230 out of £900 income, 25% of a tight budget, goes on servicing loans and energy arrears.

I do feel that the DFW bods can come up with good suggestions to combat the huge pressure of unmanageable debts. Failing that, Citizens Advice.

Perhaps another option would be for them to move to a studio flat or 1 bedroom to free up another £100- 150 per month and then pay a small monthly fee for offsite storage for the bulky kit?

I think the responses have been fairly constructive and only lightly critical but the OP seems fixated on the magic bullet of benefits which simply is out of scope for their circumstances.

Go to the Debt Free Wannabe board to submit your details there and the experts there will tell you how to sort out a more affordable repayment schedule with your creditors.

This is the key thing for you to do, OP. Some of my creditors have accepted token payments when I've been in dire financial straits which has made a massive difference.

Another suggestion I have is to ring up your electric company with a current meter reading and get them to work out whether you are in credit - you're paying a relatively high monthly payment and when I was in the same position I rang them to find out could it be reduced and was thrilled to find that because of the high monthly payments I was actually in credit! A small bit of persuasion and a cheque was in the post to me!

Get your boyfriend to look into online jobs. I won't name the site as I have referenced it several times, but my mum is currently working 30 hours a week through an online remote workers' marketplace, bringing in $300 dollars a week, and this is presumably something that your boyfriend would be able to do as he's managed to get a degree. My mum is getting more per hour than a lot of people on there who agree to work for much lower rates in order to make themselves attractive - he might as well have a go while he's looking for work; any hourly wage is better than none at all! PM me if you want the name of the site Mum uses.

Sure you've already investigated this option, but is there any overtime at your work?

I have recently invested thirty quid to join a cash-and-carry, and in the three months I've been going I reckon I have saved double that, easily. For example, I was spending £5 a week on a big jar of not great coffee - I bought a catering size tub for a tenner (it's actually a nicer brand than I used to get) and it lasted me two months, which I reckon is a saving of at least £30. We get a massive bag of frozen chips that lasts the month for about three quid, and we buy a ginormous fresh pizza for six pounds which I chop into eight meal-size slices and freeze in cling-film. I could probably save more by being a bit more hardcore and learning to make pizza dough myself etc, but this way I feel like I am saving money without actually making things too much more hassle. I also go to the supermarket a LOT less, just for fruit and veg, which is a bonus!

I know it seems really unfair that if you were just that bit older you would be entitled to help, but at the end of the day there's no way to change that. My boyfriend and I are in a similar situation in that we earn just too much to qualify for any help, but not quite enough to cover our debts and still have enough money left over, so we've had to cut back massively on all sorts of stuff in order to keep servicing the debts and try to put away £1000 by September for our wedding. When we first sat down and made a plan for cost-cutting, it really depressed me - I felt like 'well, we both work full time so why should we be having to do penny pinching stuff ?' but as we've gone on and I've seen the positive effect it's having on our finances, I find I actually enjoy the process of coming up with new ways to save a few quid!

Do you have anything constructive to offer, or ar you just looking at getting off on an argument?

    Again.

Like I said, it depends how desperate the OP is for money.
She wouldn't have to sell anything. She takes the equipment in. They store it for 30 days. She can go back at anytime within those 30 days to buy it back. If she doesn't go back they'll sell it themselves.

I've already stated, that I can't help with the specifics of benefits. I've also already stated some posters have offered good advice.

I'm sorry, but making pawnbrokers richer just isn't one of them.

And get real - if she is in as bad a state as she is - paying extortionate amount to get her gear back in a month is really helping isn't it *rolls eyes*.

Though the merits (or not) of Cash Converters can be debated, the usual moneysavingexpert tip is to actually sell unused/unwanted stuff on ebay.

Sure, next you'll be telling her to try a bit of prostitution.

Do you understand what constructive means?

    Absolutely.

A fair price, and a small fee to pay.
