Options
Don;t believe what my OH has done - he went to B&Q to buy paint, and while he was there he bought some Tile, Shine and Clean  . I said Stardrops would have done. NO NO he siad this stuff is good. When i asked how much, he didn;t dare tell me, i said a least £3.99, he went quiet..... finally he told me £7.00    .

Any ideas on how a train a hubby to be OS please

Yes. His trip back to B&Q for a refund will be a valuable lesson. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Slowly. Lead by example, it doesn't help telling them! Don't be surprised if, when he does finally get it, he thinks it was all his own idea in the first place!

Reading your post there are two issues, one involves OS cleaning and the other involves basic budgetting/shopping savvy.

OS Cleaning: If he has his own cleaning chores (such as the bathroom tiles) then really it's a simple case of thinking through all the tasks which he *owns* and talking to him enthusiastically about the cheaper alternatives. This conversation needs to take place *before* he runs out of pricey alternatives ;) Doesn't need to be a "Come-here-sit-down" kind of talk, but slot it into your daily chit chat: "Ooooh, I was reading on MSE that stardrops is a great all round cleaner and several of the posters said their tiles came up a real treat!! It only costs 58p. Imagine!! All those people taken in by expensive commercial products when all the time there's this great all rounder for pennies! We should try that. Think of the savings we can put towards (insert your own saving goal buzzword - holiday - decorating - savings - slap up meal) " You could even go a bit further and list it's many other attributes.

On the budgetting/shopping savvy aspect then it all boils down to how you already budget and who takes responsibility for shopping.
Remember Martins Money Mantra: Do I need it? Can I afford it? Have I checked if it's cheaper anwhere else? But I would add an OS tagline: Is there a cheaper way of doing it?
If you are both asking yourselves these questions before purchases then at least you're both singing from the same songsheet!

In all relationships, you should both have joint goals that you are working towards. In most cases these all require finance of some sort. So, if you share the same goals and it needs funds, you will be three quarters of the way towards retraining your OH because you simply need to point out the difference between a £7 and the cost of a bottle of stardrops. If you are giving your tiles a thorough clean say 4 times a year potentially that is OH's £28 spent on the job compared to 4 bottles of stardrops @ 58p (multifunctional) of £2.32 A potential saving of: £25.68 which could have doing towards your goal. I find men tend to like to see facts and figures which can be the biggest persuasive factor ;):D

Turn it into humour (not mocking nor sarcastic) because you don't want to belittle his efforts (especially if he's doing the ikky job of cleaning tiles ;) ) or make him feel he's a numpty noo noo! Even OH's are permitted to make mistakes ... as long as they learn from them  By gentle teasing over his extravagance, he'll either remember to ask you first what is the best product for the job, or remember from this experience that in future, stardrops is the answer! The last thing you want to do is give him the opportunity to feel negatively about it and then give up doing his share!!
He's probably already half way there if he was feeling too shamefaced to admit straightaway the price he'd paid :)

Training partners to act as we would like them to and still permit them the honour of believing it was all their own idea in the first place, takes much practise and patience plus the humility to allow them that illusion ;)

Don't forget to make those tiny steps he makes in the early days VERY VERY rewarding - I'm sure you know what really 'floats his boat' - then as he gets better, drop the frequency of the reward, but still offer a 'jackpot' reward every so often - it works for dogs too!

PS - you might want to read a book called 'Don't shoot the dog' - it's about managing relationships with OH's and work colleagues and works well with kids too
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • Make it seem like it's his idea to save money. That always works with my OH. I feel a bit bad about it sometimes though. He will come running into the house saying "look at the great deal that I got on X" and sometimes I just want to pat him on the head and say "oh you clever boy" and then rub his belly.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
