Chilli Jam and jelly

It will probably clear when you boil it up. Every single batch of apple jelly Ive ever made has been cloudy at the dripping stage then it clears when its boiled up with sugar. If you are sure you didnt squeeze, I wouldn't worry about it and would press on as planned. If you filter again you will just lose more juice0

Thanks Diane for passing on the Asian Chilli Jam receipe from Lorraine Pascal, I was watching avidly then had to sort tea out or something and when I came back it was made-I couldn't face i-player with our dodgy internet connection and have a small glut of purple chillis that I will need to do something with!0

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll ad it to the existing thread on making chilli jam:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0

Could it have been due to the mashing? All the jelly recipes I've seen just say to chop up the apples and after cooking them, strain them.
I'm wondering if the mashing has the same effect as squeezing the bag.0 -
I made a batch last week of apple jelly and ended up chucking it as the apples went 'bitty' on me rather than providing juice..they were awful but they were some of the free ones I got from the common so they didn't cost me anything.
The juice drained very cloudy and with this pithy taste that stuck to your tongue urg!
I made a huge batch of mint jelly today (which is basically apple jelly with a bit of vinegar and mint) and after draining the juice through I then put it through a really fine sieve again and it seemed much better resulting it a clear jelly, although it did look a bit cloudy before being heated back up.
Persevere Kev its worth it!0 -
:mad:Hi Heeeeeylp. I've been given chilis from my lovely neighbour so thought Id make Nigellas chili jam. But I didnt read the recipe right and didnt deseed the hot ones. So now I have a bowl of red pepper and chili pepper mix with millions of seeds ion it. Is it a lost cause? Can I still use them?
Yours

Hi Louise
Try to pick a few out if you can but frankly, I always leave the seeds in to make it more spicy! It should not affect the taste or anything else

I know I shouldn't laugh at your misfortune but you cheered me up and reminded me of my chilli soup. My SIL gave me a weightwatchers recipe for chilli soup which stated you used 3 deseeded chilli peppers. I decided (in my wisdom) it would be bland so used the whole bag which was 6 and didn't realise I'd bought Birds Eye Chillis which are amongst the hottest you can get. Hubby nearly self combusted on the first mouthful and the rest went down the drain.
I was banned from using any kind of chilli for a long time after that:D0
