Companies that won't deal with women!

I agree with the others, it's a really well known sales tactic, they won't want to ring you later with a quote either, they'll sit you there while they 'ring the boss' to see if they can get you a better deal if you sign today etc etc. and you won't get your house back all evening. I'm afraid I've experienced it. The reputable ones do it just the same as the disreputable. I'd cancel the appointment and get a local builder in.
I agree though, it can feel personal, I'll never forget taking my car into a garage and the guy telling me he'll chat with my husband about the work that needed doing later!! I was livid as I know far more about cars than my now-ex.
On the other hand, another garage mechanic, who knew I'd been on a car maintenance course said to me 'you know a bit about this don't you' and insisted on dragging me down into the pit to gaze up into the innards of my poorly, oil-dripping car while he explained the finer points of the problem, and me in my best white top ready to go to work! I said nowt though!
Please cancel the horrible salesman, there are similar products out there without encouraging these awful tactics. It's so insulting.

I think it was Cambrian Windows.0 -
I know, I'm getting a bad feeling about it. I think they are going to be here for ages and ages and ages, and I won't be able to get rid of them. I've already had a quote from a local tradesman, I just thought it might be a good idea to get another.
Post on the DIY board, hopefully you will get a recommendation for a local firm.Gone ... or have I?0 -

How am I wasting their time by cancelling the appointment? I am saving them a wasted journey.
Apologies, but you haven't said that you are cancelling the appointment though !Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
I'm in the market for some new patio doors. There was a stand in Ikea advertising doors, windows etc. so I arranged for them to call me about getting a quote.
They rang me tonight - this is the gist of the conversation:
"Will you & your partner be in tomorrow? If you have one, that is?"
"Well, I am at work but I'll be back about 5.30. He is going out in the day but I don't know what time he'll be back."
"Oh, we need both of you to be there really. We have to talk to both of you about it."
!!!!!!? My partner doesn't live with me, and even if he did, it's my house and he has no interest in discussing patio doors with them.
I feel half inclined to tell them to shove it.
Paranoid or what !!!! I think It's you who has a complex about being a woman :rotfl:0 -
You'll probably find the local guys give you a better product and a better price. My MIL was ripped off by a double glazing company when she bought a new door - I was able to challenge it and get her out of the contract before any harm was done, but basically, I was shocked when I delved into how the market works - as far as I can see, they seem to charge at least double what it should cost, and the sales tactics they use are shocking. It all hinges around the appointment in the home, and wearing you down over time. (The company that did this to my 87 year-old ma in law was Anglian, but they aren't the only ones at it - it's industry-wide with the nationals). We've only ever used local, reputable companies, and only once years agomade the mistake of letting one of the DG companies into the house. Since then, we won't deal with them.Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0

Stay away from the biggies, they will be the highest quote possible. The salesman will turn up in a big car and talk, and talk and talk.
Go to one locally and they will always give you a reasonable price. Get 3 quotes altogether, ask for previous customers telephone numbers and ask to go and see the jobs.
I did this with a 'biggie' the man gave me 2 previous customers names and we went to see them, the first one said 'Wouldnt touch them with a barge pole, next one said he wished he had never heard of them, nuff said.
We didnt go ahead with the job.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
