Companies that won't deal with women!

I'm in the market for some new patio doors. There was a stand in Ikea advertising doors, windows etc. so I arranged for them to call me about getting a quote.

They rang me tonight - this is the gist of the conversation:

"Will you & your partner be in tomorrow? If you have one, that is?"

"Well, I am at work but I'll be back about 5.30. He is going out in the day but I don't know what time he'll be back."

"Oh, we need both of you to be there really. We have to talk to both of you about it."

!!!!!!? My partner doesn't live with me, and even if he did, it's my house and he has no interest in discussing patio doors with them.

I feel half inclined to tell them to shove it.

They want you both there so they can push you into a sale. If he isn't there you can always say that you need to speak with your partner about it.

    I don't think it's because you're female.

I agree. They said they wanted you both there, not just him. Did you tell them that he didn't even live there?

They didn't ask. I've dealt with loads of tradesman since buying my house 13 years ago and not one has ever asked me if I have a partner or insisted on seeing him!

I only said about him because I thought they might want to come earlier when I was at work, and he could let them in, show them the doors and they could ring me later with a quote.

These are not tradesmen, these are sales people. Sales people know that for most big financial decisions, both of the adults in the household would need to agree, hence why they want you both there.

Personally I would not invite any sales people into my home. I would get a recommendation from friends/ family, and preferably use a small local company where the people that visit you really are tradesmen!

    Geri,

Get over yourself! Realise that it has nothing to do with sexism or any other form of ism. Sales, pure and simple. There isnt a claim on offering or anything to be paranoid about. It is just a smart sales person.

Not that smart though, since I have no intention of going ahead with the purchase. They also rang me twice to ask me the same questions.

I know, I'm getting a bad feeling about it. I think they are going to be here for ages and ages and ages, and I won't be able to get rid of them. I've already had a quote from a local tradesman, I just thought it might be a good idea to get another.
