You can greatly improve the clarity & readability of text using the built-in free Microsoft CLEARTYPE technology which far too many people are blissfully unaware of.
Just visit this Microsoft page to learn about it:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/WhatIsClearType.mspx
Or just jump straight to setting it up and trying it out on your PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx
Takes just a moment to do.
AND if you have an APERTURE GRILLE conventional monitor (eg Sony Trinitron, Mitsubishi Diamondtron tube technology) you can get the benefit on that too. I've an old iiyama Vision Master 19" CRT with a Diamondtron in it and recently had to set up my PC afresh after a catastrophic hard-disk failure. Took me nearly a month to remember about ClearType and had been wondering on and off why it didn't look as good anymore!
NB: While this works with all TFT LCD panels, this only works on the MINORITY of conventional monitors that have an APERTURE GRILLE - ie the historically more expensive/select Trinitrons etc.
Enjoy!
I'm not sure if Microsoft fixed it, but Cleartype used to look pants on my Dell (Samsung) LCD screen. The problem was that Cleartype assumed the pixels were ordered R then G then B. In fact not all LCD screens are ordered in this way.

What a great price - but I just don't need one...I'm trying to justify it to myself...
Bought a Hyundai L72D 17 inch 4:3 (regular) TFT for £190 a year ago... :-("To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0 -
In the same boat - got a 17" 4:3 about year and half ago .... nice Sharp one. For this price though ... very tempted :-)0

So don't lose another second & make that order NOW!!!
Thanks Goofycat and Thanks OP.
Well! I have done now.
She'll probably kill me when she gets home but the frying sound at the back of my lovely (HUGE) 21" CTX worried me a little this morning and it'd be just my luck that tomorrow it explodes and I wont be able to place an order without getting on the site.
Pity that I deliberated and missed the delivery in 2-3 days but we are moving home in about 6 weeks and I didn't know what to do plus short of readies at the mo due to huge outgoings (building a house) but, hey, whats another 100 quid.
At least I wont have to cart the washing machine sized CRT when we go.:)"Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -
Being totally ignorant of the new technology - do I need to buy this cable (That everyone's talikng about) if connecting to a PC or is that for some other purpose?
NB.
Oh Well. Just Bought one on Ebay just in case."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -

.
3. Hope that goes well, & you're able to have the monitor delivered to the correct address without hassle.

They fixed that years ago - as well as "RGB - most common " they also offer "BGR - very rare" and provide on-screen comparisons so you can just use your eyesight and brain to decide if you like what it's doing and prefer it one way or the other.0 -
No good to me then.
I have a Nvidia Gforce 2 MX 400 Graphics card and having got upside down on my back and twisted my neck round 45 degrees I cant see anything resembling the DVI socket so It'll be VGA for me till I upgrade.
Still, I shall have the cable ready for when we do.
BTW goofy, Thanks for those comments but regarding No 2. - when it arrives I'll be too busy playing for at least a couple of hours so hopefully her passion would have worn off by then.:)"Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -

The monitor has both a standard analogue D15 'VGA' connector thats been the standard for about 10-15 years, AS WELL AS the better digital DVI-D connector.
It's up to you which interface you choose to connect your PC via - subject of course to having the necessary PC video output socket + cable/adapters.
Logically:
If your PC has D15 VGA output then connect it to the D15 VGA monitor in
If you PC has DVI-D video output then connect it digitally via a DVI-D (single or dual core) cable to the DVI-D monitor input.
BUT If you haven't got a DVI-D cable yet then your DVI-D output on your computer almost certainly came with a D15 VGA converter and you can use the D15 VGA monitor in until you get a DVI-D cable.0
