the cost of ebay

Just for comparison, because this is something I have just considered.
I just sold a new PS2 on amazon.co.uk at a similar price.
Buyer's Price: £91.50
Postage & Handling: £1.99
Total Amount: (£93.49)
Less Amazon.co.uk Marketplace Fees: (£14.73)
Less VAT on Amazon.co.uk Marketplace: (£2.21)
Total Due Seller: £76.55
Firstly, on amazon.co.uk you have no control over the postage charges - £1.99 is not enough to package and post a PS2. Secondly, the amazon.co.uk fees are exorbitant (just confirmed online their closing fee is 17.25%).
Amazon.co.uk has the advantage of easy listing - you simply find your item on the site and list it there - no need for any in-depth description or photo. Plus, if the item doesn't sell you pay nothing.
On lower value items, it might be better to list on amazon.co.uk as it saves a lot of time.. but for anything of any value eBay is surely better.. does anyone have any opinion on this?0 -
Amazon.co.uk gives a different postage credit depending on the item. The PS2 credit is the same as sending a PS2 game - it is illogical.0

what a swizz
You should try your local bricks and mortar auction house where due to lack of bidders you might have only got £ 50 for the item and then less deductions of auctioneers fees plus VAT total of say £ 15 you would have been left with only £ 35 compared to £ 84 on ebay. You would also have had petrol costs too and from the auction house twice to deliver the item and to go back to pick up your money.:j0 -
I've used both Amazon and Ebay to sell high(ish) value items up to around £250.
Amazon fees may be higher but at least I get to list for 60 days, don't have to deal with scammers wanting me to post it to their mate in some obscure part of the world, there's no listing fees if it doesn't sell and I'm guaranteed to get paid.
eBay is a lot more unpredictable and risky but obviously the payoff is often (but not always) better.0 -
Basically with ebay it costs you less than 10% if you accept paypal, use extra features etc.
10% is really pretty low. Try selling something in a shop for 10% comission and you wouldn't find may shops willing to take your business. I do agree though that its nice money ebay make for not actually doing anything as the majority is done "virtually" and when you do get a problem they are not the most helpful company in the world.0 -

Don't be so sure, there are as many scammers on Amazon as there are on ebay and with Amazon they have a complete 'right' to a refund within 7 days don't forget.

Precisely. All the fees are less than 10% of your final selling fee.cafenervosa wrote:If you can't handle the fees then ebay is not for you. Those fees are not that bad, you don't need the gallery and paypal is an optional method of payment.
It's a free market. Nobody's forcing you to use it. You use it, you play by the rules that Ebay sets up.
You don't have to like it ;-)0 -

Well almost, but they do have to return the item in the condition it was sent in. Also, this is basically the law for any internet sale transaction although the DSR does need further clarification.
One thing that many people forget is that Ebay shop and BIN items are not auction items and therefore buyers are covered by the DSR and can return for any reason within the cooling off period.0 -
nutmegman.................. Did you read eBay and Paypal's T&C???
They clearly tell you what the costs will be....so why bother using eBay and Paypal......knowing what the costs will be...then complain about it?????
Answer's simple...if you don't like it...don't use it!!!

Hi guys, I don't post often and sorry if this is in the wrong place, but have recent experience of ebay and wondered if you could comment/offer advice?
I sold my first item, pick up only, cash on collection - excellent transaction.
Having had such a good experience, thought I would try and buy a couple of DVDs for the kids.
Successfully bid on two items (different sellers) and paid for both on PayPal. First DVD arrived soon after (allowing for bank hol Monday)
The other one has yet to arrive. If I paid on 28th August, am I worrying too soon? Have checked this seller's feedback and find he has sold loads of DVDs with lots of positive feedback, but then 3 negatives in 2 days, all like me, not received goods.
Have I lost my money?0
