The beans themselves are fine - it's what they chuck in the accompanying sauce that does the damage to you... but then, let's be honest - it's really the sauce we all like, actually, eh?
Ignore the sodium and sugar if you insist. The NHS will be sure to pick up the REAL bill later, of course...
Oh, by the way, I like 'em too, dammit....0 -
I think I've said this before ... somewhere  ? I've always preferred the own label beans whereas OH has always gone with Heinz.
The other week since the Heinz beans were on offer so we bought some for the first time in ages and the salt / sodium level as well as the salt level was lower in the Heinz beans than in the OL ones that we had (tescos & Morrisons). I used to work in the food industry and there was always a drive to decrease salt in the food we sold - the fact is people like it.
By the way I stopped adding salt to my food when I was 12 after my Gran had a triple by pass - that was enough for me.
Beans - I love them. I like them cooked to destruction. On toast is great but with mash is best YUMMY!!!
A couple of people have mentioned Cowboy Casserole (RachelB I think you'd like this spin on it) - my friend used to make it with mince with onion and some chopped up smoked bacon and a little chilli powder, along with the beans and topped with diced potatoes (par boiled and tossed in a little oil). Try it with some chipotle chilli if you can find some (it's lovley and smokey - quite hot too!!!)
Ahhh I love beans I do x0 -
That's strange.
I used to work for one of the salt producers and our salesman were always going around the buying departments of Heinz, HP etc, pretending that we'd just sold MORE salt to their competitor down the road and that they'd better do the same because the consumers would be hooked on the new, higher Na content.
The trick never failed...0 -
Just have a look at the nutritional on the packs.
Got to say during my experience within product development I was never asked to increase salt content by our buyers (or by anyone else) - that sounds like sales talk to me.
There is however more to heinz than their Baked Beinz of courseso you never know.
I must add that I do not stand up for the food industry as such - since I did decide to leave it mainly due to my own beliefs (and am, cashwise worse off).

We buy Heinz Organic beans.
Not sure about the salt contents (don't have an old tin to compare), but I know it's a higher percentage of actual beans per can, and no artificial sweeteners.
And my lot say they taste nicerDFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
Hi all
We have been given a HUGE 2.5 kg tin of Heinz baked beans. Only trouble is, none of us really like baked beans. Has anyone got any suggestions as to how to make them palatable? We are a family of 6, including one vegetarian.
Thanks in advance!

You can turn them into chilli beans by adding chilli powder. As I'm doing Slimming World at the moment I have chilli beans with pasta and some cheese grated on top. Nice as a lunchtime snack.
I always add baked beans to a meat chilli, and for a cheap sausage casserole I do this
1 tin toms
1 tin baked beans
pack of sausages
red and green pepper
worcestershire sauce
brown sausages, add other ingredients and simmer till cooked.
You can also add mushrooms and curry powder to them as well for a kind of bean curry.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
why not swop it with friend for something else? Or share out aquired wealth??0
