phone bill jumped from £40 to £4400 in oe month after buying HTC desire!

    If this actually happened then get onto customer services and ask them about 'bill shock' resolution. They'll usually waive the charges if you agree to sign up to a Bolton or tariff with a data bundle. And/or offer a compromise payment of £100. Failing that go to you MP.

    Thats an excellent suggestion. Do complain to your MP, before that approach your local newspaper and Watchdog, Which consumer magazine etc, then contact the MP. ask him / her whether they could query this with the ministry incharge of mobile companies whether they plan on sending a direction to companies to make it mandatory to give alerts to customers when double their usual bill occurs so that bill shock does not happen. MPs need to bring this practise to the attention of the relavant minister as many people will be affected by such predatory tactics of companies charging 10£ per MB.

    No, no. The £10 a meg is a kind of fall back position. If there are no data products on the acc but the customer use them the system has no template to apply for the billing so it drops to £10 a meg (I have no idea why, it must be a default value somewhere).

    BUT if that's the case then the bill dept will apply a data bundle or product and do a bill recalc. Its a known issue and they know how to sort it.

    £10 a meg isn't a correct charge, it's an indication that something is missing from the acc.
  • Wahey!! I WON!!. Orange have wiped out £4400 of charges & given me free unlimited data for the next two years....no idea how that happened?? its only a guess but - perhaps it was the fact that I called The Daily Mirror are they running the story on monday??? who knows?


    The unlimited data package they should have given by default as I have a smartphone, somehow was deleted from my contract on the switch over. Thus taking my £40 bill up to £4400 because of the automated email push system which is the default setting for the phone.

    Interesting detail i found out though. On a personal contract if your bill goes above £1000 the credit control department steps in and stops things until they are sure this is intentional use of the phone etc. However I am on a small business contract with one phone and my credit limit is the same as a company with 100 phones, therefore i could have racked up a bill of over £20K before the credit control department gets itchy! something wrong there eh?
