Wow this is truly shocking, but if you work it all out the charges seem like they could get that high without a data plan.

The HTC Desire I believe is connected to the Internet 24/7 unless otherwise instructed, primarily why T-Mobile have a 3GB specifically for Android phones.

I would try and see if the Sun or any other news company are interested in publicing the article, as someone else has suggested. I'm sure they would be interested in a £4,400 phone bill purely from internet surfing. Should highlight that these network providers are robbers and need to be taught a lesson.

In fact a similar thing happened to Adam Savage from Mythbusters -- definitely an interesting read -- http://blogs.computerworld.com/mythbuster_adam_savage_fights_11_000_at_t_bill_with_twitter_army

    Thanks for your reply

you tube no data steaming.... just email and facebook when out and about, nothing else. This was whilst I had free broadband in my flat and was working from home!

    1) Turn your Mobile Data OFF until you've got a bundle.

    2) Is your HTC Desire set to automatically connect to WiFi when you are at home? If not, do it. That will help for a start.

    3) Also, download 3G Watchdog immediately (via WiFi!!!) - essential free App.

    4) Download an App Killer and drag the button onto your home screens. Use it to stop Apps running, otherwise they keep going.

Do you use Latitude or Google Maps? Massive data usage, because it downloads the maps or images constantly. Any other location-based Apps are similarly hungry.

Might also want to take a look at NetCounter for Android, very nice app :)

EDIT: oooh just looked at 3G Watchdog looks very nice -- the automatic disable of 3G once a certain limit is reached is a great feature missing from NetCounter.

I'm sorry but surely if you were using facebook and emails whilst out and about you knew what the per mb charges would be?. just looking at a few emails thats £3 gone already.
Im sorry again but only a fool would use the internet on a phone without having a data bundle, and a smartphone without a data bundle thats just plain daft.

This was 'with' a data bundle and when I took the contract on they said it was unlimited. I have been advised to argue that i was mis-sold the contract considering the phone they sent me was a smertphone. Even without my data bundle being considerd this is £150 per day to check my emails!

Unlimited is never unlimited. MY unlimited is a measly 500mb FUP atm which im rather peeved about but its the way things are going.

    what is your data allowance?
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

you shouldnt be charged anything for going over, which is why I said to check that the data aspect has definitely been applied to your account, Orange have a fair usage policy which means that if you exceed your limit they will ask you to cut down they wont charge you, any chance of copying whats on your bill? that will say what exactly your plan is and what's inclusive.

The 24M is the contract term of 24 months. You can have a data plan on this contract IF you added it as a flexible extra.

wasnt there something recently about a roaming data charges cap of 5£ per day or something like that. if that is applicable while roaming in the EU http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/networking/2010/03/02/european-data-roaming-caps-come-into-force-40064624/ why is such absurd data charges being allowed within the UK.

surely the data charges limit must be similar or lower for using on parent network if there is a limit for roaming charges to prevent bill shock. these rules were brought to prevent precisely such data charges (for roaming).
