Well, even in a second (third, fourth) pregnancy your general health and well-being still need to be supported.
Hmmm dont know, you dont get this till 25 weeks anyway. If you have not been looking after yourself up until that point £190 from the Government aint going to change that and the damage may be already done!
And what exactly is it meant to be spent on? Vitimans can be obtained form your GP if needed. Healthy food should be being bought from your wages or benefits already!0 -

I have to say, this is the 1st post I'v ever read of someone supporting this pointless grant.
Even expectant mothers reliant on benefits have stated it is a waste of money. The £190 isn't spent on apples and bananas, it's spent elsewhere.
It only came in a year or so ago, so it wont be missed.
A scheme like this should be the 1st to go in my opinion. Totally pointless.0 -
sorry if it's been asked but is the increase in child element per family or per child? i have 3 kids would i get an extra £150 or an extra £450? also wats the cut off for this increase?
Everyone will get this increase in the child element, and it will increase your maximum possible award (ie. what you would get if your income was £0) then your maximum possible award reduces as your income increases.0 -
does anyone know when the sure start maternity grant restriction comes into force ? I didnt catch that bit on tvWins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0

Glad to see the end of SMG (didn't qualify) and HIP. The proceeds are only abused. Family nearby of income support - nobody works 5 children - so they received £2500 in SMG alone - what a waste of public money from somebody who actually pays into the system and did not receive any work maternity pay package!0

from what i am reading health in pregnancy grant is being cut from April 2011, but the sure start maternity grant now only being available for first pregnancy doesn't seem to have a cut date.have looked everywhere but there isn't one so assuming this is immediate0

Lots of childminders drop off and pick up from my local nursery.
As for the mums going home to watch Jeremy Kyle (not sure why you assume that tbh, they might be going to clean the bathroom or do the shopping without their child in tow) I don't see it as a waste of public money. A couple of hours of nursery can be good for a child and I think it would be very mean to a child to keep them at home and then send them to school without that nursery experience. It's only a couple of hours a day so it doesn't stop them from spending quality time with mummy. I used to get the cleaning and shopping done while mine was in nursery so that I could spend the whole afternoon at the park or baking or swimming etc. giving my child quality time.
Nursery when they are 3-4 is more about the child than the mum, it's not just childcare for her to work, it's about playing and socialising for the child.
In my example I know that is what they are doing as they then talk about it at pick-up time, or they all sit around each others houses watching it.
I whole-heartedly agree that it should be treated as play time for children, and this is how I treat it for mine, but I just wish that it could be a little more realistic in terms of actually providing me with some kind of affordable child care - where I live it seems to be the norm that it is just the 2.5 hours of care. I would love to go back to work and provide extras for my family and feel more of a 'provider', but it just isn't worth it when it comes to weighing up the pros and cons - as an aside agree with the lowering of IS age limit to 5, however, as another poster mentioned, where are all these term time, school hours jobs going to come from?0 -
