5?? I supported it being cut to 7 but that seems very harsh.

Why do you think it is harsh that parents should go out to work when their child turns 5 years old ?

Children of 5 years old are in school from 9am until 2pm.....whats the problem with mum getting a part time job say.. 10am until 1.30pm ?

Jeremy Kyle and such like IS available on Ntl catch up service you know !

Well I can't afford child care. My husband left me and doesn't pay anything towards the children. I didn't work when my husband was here as he was paid well (and we didn't claim WTC)

I wish I could afford to pay for child care. If I earn £8000 for doing 30 hours work how can I afford to pay for childcare?

Childcare costs can be met by tax credits...meaning they would pay the largest percentage of childcare costs and YOU would pay only a very small amount. So theres no such thing as "cant afford childcare"

Theres the csa for chasing absent parents who refuse to pay to support their children......the even greater thing is that any maintenance received from him is disregarded when counting income for tc's

Am i the only the one who finds it a god send that people will be made to go out and find work instead of sitting at home claiming income support ?

ALL children attend school once they reach 5yrs old , so theres no reason for mum to laze about the house in your pj's all day !

There are part time jobs available if you search for them!

    hahahahahaha. the CSA. hahahahaha

my ex is self employed and pays himself a minimum wage so that the CSA can't touch him

Oh dear, oh dear. HMRC need to be more proactive in educating customers about the income disregard then or we will see a huge increase in overpayments. The low income disregard is what caused so many problems when tax credits were introduced.

thanks for bringing this to our attention, this needs highlighting in a seperate post,as you rightly have said this is going to cause many problems with overpayments

Yes it is £545 a year that you will lose but with the change in income tax you will gain £400 per year (if you both work) so the difference is only £145 per year or £12 per month - We all have to do our bit dont we?

We don't both work (don't make assumptions) and with the change in NI it is £91. Plus as my DH works in Local Government he is having a 3 year pay freeze - slightly more than 'doing our bit' as you put it. With freeze in child benefit and his pay freeze + rise in VAT I would argue that we are quite seriously worse off.

Not helpful to suggest that we all have to do our bit is it. The point of this thread is to identify how the budget is affecting people, I thought this bit had gone under the radar and people were not aware as I wasn't.

why don't you both work if you can't afford to live on £30k a year from one income...

patchwork cat you need to think yourself lucky that your husband works in local government and has only had a pay freeze. my husband works in the construction industry and we all know how badly the industry has been hit, we have seen his pay fall by £400 per month!
