Kwikfit will probably just use standard 10/40 semi for all cars. Many modern engines need thiner stuff these days.

Avoid any fast fit for servicing, you will be much better finding a good indie who will use proper OEM parts and the right spec oil.

As for engine flushes they can sometimes do more harm than good especialy if a car has had infrequent oil changes.

the car is Y reg so well out of warranty, was just looking for a good deal on a service, but from what ive heard its not good  just cant afford the full VX service at the moment -£265!!
    Have a look at these:
    http://www.servicingstop.co.uk/
    http://www.prestigecarservicing.com/

There are a couple of others. They operate out of a network of independents and its reasonably priced. The first one was on Dragon's Den a while ago.

In that case any good local garage should be able to do the job well. Also you may want to phone around as my local VX dealer do special deals on servicing for older cars but then I wonder if they will find other faults. I did take my Corsa (ten years old at the time) for a free vauxhall health check and they found it needed new shocks and the pads were too big for the discs and that what was causing the break noise.

I knew the shocks had gone but I was surprised they didn't want to sell me the work. They quoted £300 for the new shocks so I got my local indie who did them for £70 for the pair. I sold the Corsa in the end as the head gasket went.

We found this as well, our local dealer does '4+ club' servicing on our similar vintage corsa for £130; that's for a full annual service. Local independent wanted £180! But then he does have the village monopoly I guess.

£130 is a good price and then if they say you need new shocks, discs, pads, exhausts what ever you can get them done else where cheaper.

My dads Fiesta is 13 years old so I just service it myself (get my indie to the oil change) but do most the filters myself and get him to do any complex job such as the flipping bushes. It works out really well.

For my Panda though its new so it will have to be dealer servicing as I want to keep FIAT happy after the warranty expires ;)

My local Kwik Fit has the viewing window partially obscured with some display rack of tyres - right where the seats are! :p

I'm sure by the time KF have finished with your car the price will be more than 265...

That Scheme isn't what you think it is. It's actually run by a company called Forte that makes (largely pointless) engine flushes. Garages can only become members if they pay quite a hefty fee and agree to use these engine flushes, regardless of whether they're any good or not.
That's extremely interesting to know. Thanks. I noticed a garage I used which ran this scheme had Forte stuff on the shelf. Also, browsing the reviews of garages, I have my doubts whether some reviews are genuine- and whether bad reviews would be added to the site at all.

Yes I've heard similar things about the 'reviews' on the site as well.
@jd82, Wouldn't dream of actually letting VX do any work apart from the service! Sometimes they suggest things that don't need doing, sometimes they suggest things that we get done for about half price at National up the road, and sometimes (!!!!) they don't suggest anything at all! I think it depends who does the actual service as to what gets suggested. Having said all that we've recently discovered a very good (and reasonably priced) independent vaux specialist who might just get all our custom from now on...

I did read somewhere that the bad reviews are never added to the good garage scheme website. Although the garage I used for last service was on the scheme. Nothing to complain about though.
