    Things must have changed.
I used to insure the beach buggy, with a 1600cc engine, with a shorrocks supercharger when I was a student, It was affordable for me then as an only car.

Yes they have changed dramatically. My son has just bought his car and he got one weeks free insurance with it from Aviva. When they quoted for the annual policy they quoted over £4000. Mindboggling isnt it!

Make sure you try quotes fully comp, its ridiculous but all insurers now seem to offer fully comp policies cheaper than their third party fire and theft cover. It's mad.

Frist year at 18. Is going be £1200+ no matter what the car is. A few things to reduce find your local insurance broker and go though them, add a parent to the insurance but not as main driver, Smaller engine as possible old fiat cinqutento are good that.

If he does decide to be become a barry boy all mod must be declared otherwise insurance will be void. This will add to cost as well.

That's a good point about any mods. He simply cannot add any, at all. The insurance could quite easily double if he does. Although having said that I've heard of people who've done some minor (non performance enhancing) things and not declared them, then when claim time came around the loss adjuster didn't bat an eyelid and wasn't bothered. Just be careful!
