Hi, could anyone recommend a site I could go to to look for insurance for my 18 year old who's only just passed his test?

The best quotes I can find so far are over £3k and he doesn't have that sort of cash:(

He hasn't got a car yet but he's going to see a T reg Saxo and a 51 plate Clio (which will prob be too expensive).

Thanks

There are about a thousand threads asking (and answering) the same questions on the insurance board ;)

One tip though - neither of those cars is a good idea insurance-wise, especially the saxo.

Yes. Avoid anything that is popular with boy racers if you're trying to insure an 18 year old male. That means no Saxos, Corsas, Clios etc. For a full list of cars to avoid, go to your local McDonalds or KFC car park on a Friday or Saturday night and make a list.

You'll get a better quote on something like a Mondeo or something from Volvo.
  • Might just be worth getting a quote on 107/C1 and other slightly newer very small cars, the car needs to be in groups 1 or 2 and as said above not be a popular choice with the boy racers.

A good broker might be a better bet than the comparison sites here and they'll know which cars he can afford to insure.

+1 avoiding those cars. I'd also potentially start him on an older car. Mk3 golf type thing, which are still sturdy but not half the price to insure or tax etc.

The Golf is still a bit of a boy racer car (Stick a GTI badge on it, adds 50bhp innit mate?) and the age isn't going to make much difference on the insurance rates as they're based on the cost of repairing the car you crash into, not of repairing your car.

Modern cars are much more complicated and costly to repair, which is why insurance costs are rising rapidly, particularly for the age groups most likely to have a crash.

One reason why you should get him an older car though, is that they're easier to work on yourself, and cheaper to fix if you !!!!!! up. Get him to learn how to do basic maintenance and servicing and he'll save in the future.

The postcode is also going to have a big effect here as well. I found my Corsa 1.2 16v was cheaper to insure than my dads slightly older 8v 0HV Fiesta.

My brand new FIAT Panda costs me the same to insure as my ten year old Corsa did despite the Panda being worth a lot more.

Don't touch the golf, way too high insurance, and expensive parts if anything happens to it.

Corsa and clio are in group 1 though.

    Group 1 cars

Group 2 has a bit better choice,

Polo in there is ok, no self respecting teenager would have one, same with the suzuki, so they should be at the bottom of the price range too.

My son(18) has just bought himself a peugeot 106 because it was the cheapest to insure. He is saving for the insurance I think the cheapest quote my OH found for him was around £1500 from Admiral through one of the comparision sites comparethemarket.com.

(Quote included both parents as additional drivers)
