  • Well you've cheered me up this morning as I thought I may be the only one. I have lots of people I know but only a couple of good friends and most of those live away. Also they all tend to be blokes so don't really get the old style thing but I do find that they tend to eat at our house at least twice a week (funny that  )

I think i've reached the stage in my life where it is difficult to meet new friends as I don't have any children so can't start talking to people that way and when I'm not working I'm at home getting things done. I find it doesn't bother me to much but there are times when it would be nice to have a natter with someone you know :o

Anyway - look at me going on! In answer to the OP's question - No - I have no OS friends.
You laugh because I'm different - I laugh because you're all the same

Not really any OS friends in my address book. I think I'm the original one from my movements!!!! Mum and Nan I suppose are and I'm slowly converting one of my closest friends

However, work buddies are always asking me to bring in HM cakes and goodies:rolleyes:

  • None of my friends are at all OS!! They say things like "you're too young to be doing that sort of thing" :rotfl: I don't think at 21 I'm too young. Makes me laugh when they say they don't have time yet I have a full time job and a part time job!! Even my work colleagues look at me in disbelief when I say about the things I've been doing! :D

Most of my "friends" think I'm bonkers, although less so now that they have all had to go back to work when they're maternity leave ended & I'm still at home:D My best friend woudl like to be more OS but she's a city-career girl & just can't get to grips with OS'ing it at home, although her health is now starting to suffer so there's a chance yet that I could convert her Like most of you, most of my friends are really nothing more than aquaintances who drop in & out of our lives, I only have a few very close real friends. I could count them on one hand with fingers to spare, in fact I'd give my spare fingers to them if they asked as we are that close!. I love my Virtual friends though, how else coudl yo u meet so many like-minded people, and anyway a physical presence isn't always necessary to feel close to someone. Plus it's so much easier to be honest about yourself & accept other peoples honesty & their flaws when you're all a bit anonymous!

Hubbys Aunt & Uncle are very OS, everything HM including wine, knitting, sewing, home grown veggies, only go shopping when they really really NEED to not want to, camper-van holidays in the UK, support local shops & businessess often in exchange for goods/services rather than cash. They are in their early 60's and have lived this way their whole lives, even down to bartering for the bricks they built their one & only (& still) house with 30 years ago!:D

    Nice thread Sarah, thanks;)

Well, I've always thought I was a bit strange because I don't have many friends but it seems I'm more normal than I thought. I do have two close friends from when our chidren were babies (23 years ago) and we have graduated from penny pinching SAHMs to part time workers until now we all work full time but still try to meet every week.

As to OS I can't classify myself as truly that yet although I'd like to be and am trying my best and neither of my friends is. My mum makes all her own bread and cakes etc and kept chickens for years but is not truly old style, just prefers her own cooking and eggs.

MIL less OS on the cooking side but very make do and mend and will not waste a morsel of food (even cutting green mould off bread or eating charcoaled toast, even though I tell her how bad it is for her).

My mum trained me in OS ways early on. I can't remember ever having a convenience meal when I was growing up and she taught me to cook, knit, sew (dressmaking and embroidery)and a whole host of other things. I was even ironing my dads shirts when I was about 10. Money was short so we made do and we saved up for things.

I don't think a day goes by when I don't think, "Thank you"

Shes still teaching me, she taught me to crochet last year, I had never got round to it.

My friends at work are definately not OS at all, they are really impressed I make our cakes and all meals. I'm trying to convert them..... Step D who has just moved in has no idea about budgeting, menu planning or healthy cooking (but I'm working on her now she is living with us!)

My friends at the local Spinning and weaving guild are much more OS than me! A lot have small holdings and are practically self sufficient and some even make the material before they make the clothes.... I can't compete with that.
