What would you do about the many foreigners who work as nurses and doctors in the NHS?

Yes, health tourism costs untold millions, takes up resources, and quite possibly even kills people.

But is it not also appalling that the government deprives developing countries of health care professionals by enticing them over here, in order to meet soundbite targets?

    easy now.

Today, the government got rid of hospital targets for surgery which means they can shuffle people around.

Too many people are poor and cannot afford Bupa.
Health is the number one priority for a human being but here in the West it is not that important because the NHS will take care of the overeating, smoking, drinking etc. What I suggest is that anyone who smokes, over eats, does not excercise, sits too long in the sun, comestic surgery, drinks too much, drug dependent, abortion a yearists etc.. etc... should not be allowed any service whether they have paid in or not. For instance if a over eating fatty smoker signs up for bupa the policy is expensive so why should my NI compensate for a lardbutt or someone to have two / three abortions or alcohol misuses / drug misuse WHY should I pay for them.....they cost us a fortune!

That would scare people into looking after themselves. Nowt wrong wid dat

But then again, im too chilled to worry....

The stuff you mention is what vast numbers of younger people indulge in. They think they're invulnerable, so doing what you suggest would probably bar the greater majority of the population from accessing any healthcare. Don't think that would work.

    yes it would.
make them pay or make them PAY

If someone you knew was turned away for surgery because they over indulged in drugs, smoking, eating, unprotected sex then how would you react? Take to the streets / shout ? so would I BUT I would rethink my lifestyle at the same time.

    chilled man chilled
  • You could use the argument about overeating/smoking/drinking blah blah for anything! It really riles me when people say that, slash the tax off cigarettes and I'll save up the money I'm saving for private healthcare, same goes for alcohol and everything else.

I suppose you could also go the other way and say as smokers pay a lot more into the NHS, if they're working etc as well, they should really get preferential treatment.... But that would just be daft!

Tax and national insurance are two different things.

Perhaps you could request a tax exemption from purchasing cigarettes in order that you will purchase Bupa. What about the fact that there is no tax on food?

How about fatties being charged a fat tax so that they can have extra services to the nhs, like a gastric band? Would you pay a fat tax......an extra 20p on every cake that is scoffed down?

Why should I pay extra for these people when I use none of the services the NHS provide
    yet

    So what if....

you have a night out on the town, get a bit drunk and fall over and hurt yourself.Should you receive treatment? After all it was self-inflicted.

    Or have a car crash?

In those circumstances (if there is a claim), the insurers of the fault driver have to pay.

My dad was admitted to a n e this week, 8 hours later a Doctor came along to ask exactly the same questions a nurse did 8 hours previous. There was 8 of us in the waiting room n some were still there when i left alone. First my dad wasnt staying in and then he was, now he been in 2 days as he waiting for a scan. The nurses and staff were great but there was no organisation at all, it was totally laughable to say the least. My oh My longer waiting times and lists as public spending is cut too....
