    Did you completely miss the malwarebytes post?

    Yeah, however, that doesn't mean they're hogging the system resources completely. Malware uses RAM and resources like any other process. If you're running X amount of processes chewing RAM/CPU, just like the Malware, this is also a problem. You want to avoid swapping at all measures. Swapping is very slow.

    Malware is an issue, yes. I'd bet it isn't the whole problem though. The slowness is coming from processes using up RAM or chewing CPU cycles. A process being a valid one or malware is still using resources. Just saying delete the Malware and things will speed up is false advice. It'll have an impact but isn't the whole problem (in the majority of cases).

    I highlighted what you said as you said it has NOTHING to do with malware
    I cant disagree that other factors will obviously be slowing it down. But you cant say malware has NOTHING to do with it, when it clearly has (And especially as the ops struggling to get it updating etc)

  • I am totally unaware of this tool.

    However, since you seem familiar, could you explain why it's found no malware processes in memory? or am I mis-reading the logs? Please explain how these Malware hits are effecting system performance (a few are Registry entries).

    System performance is the issue after all. Right?

    Plus, what exactly is 'slow'? All applications or is IE totally bogged down its almost stopped?

    spyware/malware = hidden running processes = processor use , hence = slowness

    first post shows infections including a rogue registry tool ( false pop-ups etc) which download further infections and up load data which also = processor use...

    but as we are still awaiting OP and their combofix log its all academic at the moment

    seeming as you made yourself out to be some sort of IT wiz, im quite shocked youve never heard of malwarebytes

  • Differentiate [ crude starting point ] twixt malware & msconfig.

    Ctrl Alt Del / task manager / performance tab / what is the CPU [%] running at, and ;
    Ctrl Alt Del / task manager / processes tab / CPU tab / which processes are using most of [%] the CPU cycles, and ;
    Ctrl Alt Del / task manager / processes tab / what number [%] is showing in / System Idle Process ?

    - and then it gets interesting when you work out how long [ seconds ] it takes to free up memory & CPU cycles.

    - - it's quick & dirty method, ( Q&D ) but one which the less competent user feels comfortable with.

    - - - I advocate the benign ccleaner / tools / startup tab / for msconfig items as it gives (1) the same comfort as above, and (2) a less intimidating interface for the less able user.

    - - - - Ditto ccleaner / cleaner tab / and / registry tab.

    This almost comical.

    I noticed you had no answer to my questions, though. I'll make of that the obvious. :T

    Pretty much what I advocated. Your process will show running non-malware plus the majority of malware processes running, if any. Its quite hard to 'hide' a process since operating systems have APIs to launch processes, for example, fork(). So, in the vast majority of cases the Malware process will be visible to the operating system. Tricking the operating systems API calls isn't a non-techie thing and most Malware creators would never bother going to this length because very few people will know whether to see if it's visible or not.
