Does anyone know if vinegar has any effect on grouting between tiles? I'm concerned that the vinegar will eat away at any calcium bits in the grout, the way it dissolves limescale.

    Hi

After cleaning with a 50/50 mix vinegar/warm water, if you thoroughly rinse with water to dilute the acid then buff the tiles with a dry cloth you shouldn't have any problems as any remaining acid will not be concentrated ... and your tiles should sparkle :)

  • Great post.. going to add my tuppence worth.

I use vinegar to clean my microwave, it's a stainless steel one and comes up shiny and spotless.

I bung a mug half filled with water, add a couple of dashes of the old sarsons into it, and whizz it around on full power for 5 mins.

All the muck inside the microwave will just wipe off with a bit of kitchen towel. :D

I then dip another clean piece of kitchen towel into cup of water (be careful, its a tad hot) then I'll wipe the outside of my microwave and it sparkles straight away and doesn't really take any time in cleaning the thing out.

Hope someone finds this useful, :D

    Hi

I haven't tried vinegar for that, but do the same with lemon juice and water ... how does the kitchen smell after doing this ?, I suppose that it'd be a 'good weather' job ;)

On the same thread of thought, I suppose that a metal baking tray and a normal gas or electric oven on a lowish setting would have a similar effect .... has anybody tried this or anything similar to clean a normal oven ? ...

And now, being good money savers, what uses have we all come up with for all those vinegar bottles? I can only think of flower vases at the moment. Am not very artistic.

    Hi

I don't really have that problem as we buy vinegar in the large 5 litre plastic containers for pickled onions/eggs and to make chutney when there's the usual summer glut of tomatoes from the greenhouse (you can only ever give so many away !) and to make use of the green ones which remain at the end of the season, so there's always a couple of litres or so left over. It's usually so much cheaper to buy vinegar this way if you've got space to store it.

Anyway, something which hasn't been mentioned so far .... we live in a quite hard water area and although our kettle has a coating which reduces the buildup of limescale, the removeable filter in the pouring spout still tends to scale up. After wrecking a couple of filters in the past by rubbing them between my fingers under a running tap (they're ever so expensive to replace you know ... big moneysaving tip !!) I decided it was better to soak the filter in a cup of vinegar ..... works a treat.

back to the hair again... is it just brown vinegar that adds shine or does the white/ clear do as well? I've always diluted my washing liquid (clothes and dishes!) with vinegar and the fabric softenner as well... but i may try just replacing it with vinegar now!!

Does anyone else have a "hierarchy of contamination" in their vinegar use? Once in a while, I use it to descale the bottom of the kettle.

Then I pour the vinegar in a jar, and soak the bottoms of the electric toothbrushes to remove limescale buildup.

Then I remove the toothbrushes, and put in the toothbrush charger.

Then pour the vinegar down a sink, or down the Saniflo loo, which needs occasional descaling.

I use white vinegar as rinse aid for the dish washer....could i use the malt vinegar instead?

Also when using vinegar for cleaning the kettle do you need to boil some water and vinegar in the kettle or just put vinegar in and leave it for a few hours :o?

    Thanks :)
