A lot of people leave their routers on 24x7 anyway. I only turn mine off when going on holiday.
Most routers tend to consume barely any electricity - my electricity monitor doesn't even register the difference if I turn it off/on.
I'd be concerned about leaving any electrical appliance on 24/7 especially when going away for an extended period such as holiday.
Routers often use a switch mode power supply, plugged into a 'wall wart' style adaptor which contain more components than conventional linear transformer designs and so are more prone to failing. Often these adaptors are not made by the same company as the product they are powering, but often are bulk manufactured as cheaply as possible in Hong Kong or other offshore location, I even saw a power unit once which had no internal fusing to protect it from overload or short circuit, meaning the only protection was the 30A fuse / 32A RCD protecting the ring main in which it was plugged.
You should even disconnect a router during a thunderstorm, as they are easily damaged by spikes and surges through the mains and on phone lines. Better to disconnect when away.
Any unattended electrical appliance carries a fire risk, even fridges and freezes, but these are designed to be run 24/7 - I wonder if the manufacturers of domestic routers have designed them to run continuously?. Leaving fridges and freezes on is unavoidable, however leaving other items needlessly on / standby during holidays shouldn't be encouraged IMO"Dont expect anybody else to support you, maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when each one, might run out" - Mary Schmich0 -
I've been trying to get the page to load for over 12 hours and it's constantly down...hoping to be able to get there soon before it is too late!!0

And it's not just width (59.8cm). (
Thanks for the info. Damn! That's much wider than my current fridge! If I could push the washer/dryer a centimetre to the left and the freezer a centimetre to the right, it *might* just fit but it'd be pushing it and I presume you are supposed to leave a bit of a gap between the appliances (especially the washer/dryer).
My current fridge is broken and I'm currently looking for a new one so thought this was perfect timing - although, as I can't even get into the website, I guess the whole country is applying and I'd have about as much chance as winning the lottery!0 -
The dimensions of each appliance are as follows (all measurements in cm):
- Indesit Combi-Static Non Frost Free Fridge-Freezer (model no PBAA27D) – H200 x W60 x D65.5
- Indesit Upright Freezer (model no RZA61D) – H175 x W60 x D65
- Indesit Under-counter Fridge (model no RLA36D) – H85 x W50 x D62

The downside is that I have just read Martin's info again and it says that you must agree to them taking the old appliance away. I have just ticked 'No' on the questionnaire . Might have to apply again in DH name
.
It says
To be eligible for the trial you must:
- Have permission from the owner of your existing fridge or freezer to remove and replace this with the trial appliance
Which could simply mean unplugging it and storing it elsewhere if you want to keep it.
My freezer is less than 2 years old, so no way I'd let that go - especially as there seem to be a host of reasons my participation in the trial could be terminated early (such as an unplanned house move), at which point they can reclaim the test appliance.
My current one would be moved into the garage to store 'overflow' - especially as it's bigger than the freezer compartment of a fridge/freezer (my preference of the three appliances on offer)Cheryl0
