Sorry but the excuse "Our webservers cant take the traffic" is not a very good one. I run webservers myself, some of them are very high traffic. I never have a problem!

Martins newsletter has about 20m readers or something silly high like that. Do you run a webserver that can serve that many in one day
Also its running a script and database which I presume takes more processing power then just displaying an image or receiving an email

Thats possibly 13,000 people every minute who want your database to update with their details. Arguably it might be even more in peak times and less overnight

Theres probably a gap in the market for online companies to provide the one off capacity for web events like this

In 2006, Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment Corporation sued YouTube: massive numbers of would-be youtube.com users accidentally typed the tube company's URL, utube.com. As a result, the tube company ended up having to spend large amounts of money on upgrading their bandwidth

I have never quoted on these forums before, but wanted to say that i cannot believe the responses from some people! This was a genuine offer to help in research of energy efficient products that will in the end help and benefit society as a whole. Whoever gets the chance to get a fridge will be lucky I agree, but they will also have to do their bit in return (for those who think it is just a freebie!!). To ring up the company in question and to behave out of the ordinary is bound to ruin offers like this that may come up in the furture, hence ruining chances for yourselves!!! We are all supposed to be adults here!

Yes, but we are talking about a large company (N-Power) not a small start up business with new ambitions on a steep learning curve. N-Power already supply energy to the millions, they are an estabished comapny who charge a fair wack for gas and electricity and did infact rise their prices way above inflation not so long ago and did not bring them back down accordingly (a little but no where near enough as much as the wholesale price fell.)

All I think people wanted was for them to create a website which could have taken the many applications- not even all at the same time, over time. I don't think this is alot to ask from a company who are likely to be very well off and have an already established website.

How do I apply for this? Under the section "How to apply" on the MSE article it has just had a box saying "Npower is experiencing high traffic, come back later" for weeks, no link or anything.

Thats the point- you can't apply. (Hence the many pages of chatter about it ;))

    Hi,

As you can see we have updated our message on npower.com, which means the website is nearly ready!

We'll update this blog as soon as it's done so that you'll know straight away.

And please don't worry - we'll also be extending the deadline date.

Don't forget it's one application per household.

    Thank you Sally,
I look forward to seeing it up and running again. I thought I'd missed out on the application form because of the date. I was too slow last time so I'll keep a look out. :)
