The easiest way to check your conumption is to take daily meter readings for a week, then try switching stuff you arn't using off and measure again.
£45 is a hell of a lot for a monitor, they are typically up to 20% inaccurate and don't replace your meter.
What takes most power in your house most would be:

    Electric heaters/aircon
    Electric cooker
    Immersion heater
    Washing machine
    Tumble Drier
    Dishwasher
    Electric Kettle
    Cannabis Farm in the loft:D
    Tellys especially plasmas

You can buy an Owl monitor for £30, some libraries have a loan service.

Theys loads on ebay.. eon and npower some times send two to they customers so you find them on ebay.. I got one last week for £16 with P&P. I am using around 16 KW a day.. bit less at weekends.. I will use this info.. to set my dd higher so I dont underpay.

If you what to save money get a wireless stat/timer for centre heating. I got one off ebay 2 years ago for about £45 its saved me about £100-£150.

    Hi mikeopvc and gloomanddoom,

There are two ways to get an Energy Monitor from E.ON. One way is to buy the monitor via the E.ON Shop; the second is to register for Energy Fit.

We have sold energy saving products via the E.ON Shop for a long time now, and Energy Fit is a recent offer. Not all customers will be eligible for the Energy Fit, so they wouldn’t be able to obtain a monitor this way.

The products in the E.ON Shop are available to all, not just our customers. The Energy Fit plan is for current E.ON customers only.

    Hi UKGuy,

Sorry you haven’t had a response to your email yet, how long ago did you email us?

With regard to the software issues, does your computer specifications meet those documented in the Energy Fit ‘how to’ guide?

The ‘how to’ guide also contains a contact number for a specialist team who should be able to answer any software queries and help solve the issues over the phone.

A few queries that other users can probably help resolve:

    1. Postie played "chuck the parcel over the back gate" with my starter pack. The circuit board inside the transmitter rattles/moves if the unit is turned over or shaken gently. It moves around a bit if I wiggle the clamp plug and can see the reset button moving. Is this normal or have the circuit board supports probably broken inside?

    2. If I lean the monitor back more than about 30 degrees from vertical it just falls backwards as if the ratchet mechanism is too weak. Is this normal?

    3. I was monitoring consumption while using my microwave - food finished cooking but fan continues to run (normal). Consumption went down when microwaves stopped (about 1kW) When the fan stopped about 30 secs later, the consumption went up by about 20W.

    4. I was monitoring while using a Freeview digibox. The consumption shows about 10W more when in standby than when on. Surely that can't be right!

    Hi blackfish,

I agree with molerat on this, call us and arrange for the device to be returned. Many of the things you’ve listed maybe a result of the monitor taking a bit of a bashing.

This post is just what I have been looking for. Just recieved a bill (first in 8 months) from Eon only to find ive used a hefty amount of electricity due to what I can only assume is from using an electric heater and will now take months to actually pay it off.

Hopefully by the time I recieve my Starter Pack it will be second nature to keep switching everything off :)

Thanks for the postings, much appreciated.

In response to the FredaJones, I have been able to set the night rate as per instructions. Hold UP and DOWN arrows at the same time. After about 3 seconds the red light flashes twice. You then edit the night rate followed by night rate start time and finally day rate start time. I don't know whether economy seven varies round the UK, but for where I am it is 0100hrs to 0800hrs (it keeps in step with GMT and BST due to it being radio controlled). I double checked this by watching my meter switch over. I noticed that on the energyfit monitor, the red light comes on during night rate.

PS - on advice from molerat and Brian, I will arrange to get it swapped for a new unit due to its unexplained behaviour. Hope that doesn't mean going to the back of a 90-day queue!

Got ours today - instructions booklet a little wanting (none of that synching stuff seemed to be necessary) but all works.

Just one complaint - the transmitter, with a big battery holder cover, has a velcro pad to attach it to the meter cupboard. The velcro pad is entirely on the battery cover, not on a more solid bit of the unit.

But the velcro is much stronger than the plastic battery cover - so if/when you pull the velcro apart it (the velcro) stays put - it's the battery cover that comes away, broken at the screw fixing. Which is pretty stupid. I've had to sellotape it back together.

I would say that perhaps I shouldn't have tried detaching the velcro before putting it on the cupboard wall - ie just taken the sticky pad off the velcro and attached it. That would work, short-term.

But the problem would then arise later when the batteries run down (they don't look very longlife). To replace them the unit would need to be pulled off the wall, where it would be stuck securely with the velcro sticky pad. This would break the battery cover off then. Probably better to know now than later.
