Help with high insurance quotes

I expected a rise as insurance has gone up but this is ridiculous::mad :

53 reg fiesta 1.3 semi auto worth 2345
i'm 27 female 7 years licence held 5 years no claims held never had any claims ever, clean licence
want to travel bout 8000 miles next year parked on road sd&c

last year 481 pounds this year min I have found is just under a grand :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
thats almost double i've tried confused.com, tesco compare, quinn direct, direct line aviva, i really can't afford to pay double would of been ok with anything up to £650 but not a grand aviva quoted me £2400

I agree the rise does seem on the high side.
Has anything changed recently like your job, marital status* or type of car?
If not, what has your current insurer offered to renew at?

Otherwise, best advice is to keep shopping around, read the stickies in this forum and Martin's article on cost saving. Also consider taking an increased excess if you feel you could afford it in the event of an accident. Most firms will discount for increased voluntary excesses.

    * Some insurers charge a higher rate for divorced / separated people.

EDIT: Just had a look at some of your other posts. It looks like you are a mature student. If this is a recent thing (since your last insurance renewal) that may well be the reason. Students tend to have quite a high claims rate and i suspect most insurers may not make the distinction between an 18 yr old student and a mature student.

hi thanks for the replys I'll check if the area is reclassified

I am married with a child so low risk I thought and I have been a student for the previous 4 years

only thing to change is last year drove 4000 miles this year want to drive 8000 and when I did a quote with lower miles to see if it was that causing the high charge it only went down a small amount so can't be that

my ins is due end of july so renewal has not come through yet its just normally I go to different company each year as they're normally cheaper!

Huge difference - you haven't moved address have you? I would call the insurers and ask them - just in case an error has been made for some reason.

Who is the insurer by the way?

The child adds risk (distraction). So does the low mileage, student status etc. Do you add any named drivers? That may help.

Since when have motor insurers started to ask if a proposer has young children? That's a red herring!

Possibly adding a named driver with several years experience and a clean licence may help, although if you are sure that nothing has changed since last renewal I would call them as I posted previously.

I worked for the Admiral Group 1997-00 and they asked then. It's still asked as part of their quotes. ;)

There's always the possibility that there was something wrong with last year's price that is being corrected now ;)

The less you drive the less driving experience you have. It's not just exposure to other cars that creates risk.

As an example, which would be higher risk - someone that hasn't driven/has driven very little for 2 years or someone driving 12k a year?
