Options
I keep getting a specific !!!!!! site up .... usually I think when I'm downloading something. No joke when there are kids around!

I've tried running AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot, but nothing's being detected. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks.

  • I am no expert, if you are using win XP it may be through the 135 port. If this is the case may I suggest you visit https://www.grc.com. This site will test your defences and offers three small but effective, and free, progrmas that may help; if they don't help they certainly won't hurt.
My only other thought is to visit https://www.symantec.com, work your way to the europe site and keep your eyes open for a security test and virus test, again both are free.

Using Windows '98 ... I've run free tests at Symantec and, yet again, nothing detected.

    Thanks anway.

Have you downloaded and run the 'Uninstaller'zthat I mentioned to you beforehand?

It seems that it is about time that you cleaned up your 'puter and installed a firewall.

No Donnie, as AVG didn't appear to make any difference to Windows' speed in the long run (although it did seem quicker for a while, it's really slow again now!), I've re-installed it and all the messages have gone, so that's one problem solved for now.

Got this new problem now though and of course still trying to speed things up.

  • Another thought, have you deleted your cookies, temp internet file folder.
Is your browser being hijacked and do you have a firewall?
Are you running the latest software, windows update etc.

Ok Mimi, you should try to follow the instructions...(gentle slap of the wrist)

Have you downloaded and run the ReleaseRam program as of yet?

If not, do so and use it. The slowing down and freezing could be to do with the inefficient use of memory on your system.

Here is the version that you need; http://www.releaseram.com/mirror1.htm

Next, we'll look at the !!!!!! site...

Yes, I've already tried this program and it didn't make any difference. However, I've just run it again, the screen promptly froze on me, I rebooted and copies of my desktop icons started appearing everywhere! So many problems .....

Sorry, meant to say ... once again, it's made no difference to the speed.

I have my computer set to delete copies, temporary folders, etc. when I switch on to try and keep it "clean".

I do have a firewall (although only recently installed) and the latest windows updates.

Hmmmmm...you do seem to have problems. Normally a 'free up' of memory should prevent a lot of the 'freezing' and 'crashing'.

Once you get the program started, what happens when you click on, 'free up RAM now'?

I must admit that I am not the biggest fan of AVG Free Edition, I prefer Avast. Though, I use both as I like the 'boot up' virus check with AVG.
