Out of interest, just phoned a local guy who's told me I should have no more than 3 programs showing when I try to shut down (I've got 16). He said that he can help me, but I'll have to delete the hard disc completely and copy everything I want before he can help me. Said there's a lot of work involved and it will be £80!! Told him thanks but no.
Also 'phoned another pc repair company who are coming out later to give me a quote (no fix, no fee and no call-out charge). Expecting extortionate estimate to put right, but should be interesting! I'll report back later .....Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -

Lol. thats crazy. I wouldnt go to such drastic measures.
Seriously thou, dont worry about sending that Hijackthis log. We're trying to help you. I really couldnt care less what is on ur pc and anyway, it only shows what is running on the pc currently + files which could be malicious. The whole point of the save log function is to allow novices like yourself to show it to people like us who know what it means. I'll show you my log if it makes you feel any better:

Save yourself £80.
pennymakespounds: I would ignore the ram release program. It doesnt really do much.0 -
OK, I'll show you mine if you show me yours ... lol ;D
I'll have a look and get back.

Apart from anything else, it does appear that you have far too many programs being launched on Start Up. This will most certainly affect memory use.
My instructions were to use SpyBot to stop these programs from loading at Start Up. I only allow the most important programs to do this.
If you needed them you could launch them manually.
Are you saying that you have 16 programs in the system tray(Bottom right hand corner) on Windows start up?0 -
ye, I think you're right Donnie.
Hopefully a Hijackthis log will confirm that there are lots of programs starting up from the registry which dont need to be there.
Btw mimi, in the Hijackthis log, basically the top items are the programs you have currently running. In my log you could see I had mirc and some programming tools open:
J:\Comms\Polaris\mirc.exe
J:\Crestron\VisionTools\vtpro.exe
The next list of items are typically stuff in the registry that are starting when u turn ur pc on, eg my Sound Blaster Drivers for my sound card.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SBDrvDet]\Program Files\Creative\SB Drive Det\SBDrvDet.exe /r
In the same list are custom addons that have installed themselves. Here java has added a MenuItem to Internet Explorer:
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} -\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\bin\npjpi150.dll
Finally the log shows any Class files that can be run from internet explorer. I have a class file that allows stuff from fileplanet to be downloaded:
O16 - DPF: {39B0684F-D7BF-4743-B050-FDC3F48F7E3B} (FilePlanet Download Control Class) - http://www.fileplanet.com/fpdlmgr/cabs/FPDC_1_0_0_44.cab_Not_A_Link
Basically it cant grab anything from files, only the filename of what was running on your pc.
Oh and you can find lots of people's logs here:

As you can see, showing log files are purely to help the person who has problems with their pc.0 -
Well guys, I took the plunge and sent my very poorly computer for a complete overhaul to a reputable shop in my local town. I'm very grateful for all your advice, but I just couldn't cope with all that was wrong with it, and it just seemed to be getting worse, regardless of which programs I ran to try and rectify the problems. (I'm sure it would have helped if I'd had some idea of what I was doing!).
I've had the C drive completely "cleaned", the ram increased from 128 to 256 (for Broadband) and Norton anti-virus installed. The technician suspected at least one nasty Trojan virus and also some spyware (which I also suspected). It's now running fantastically well and I'm delighted.
Having just had £100 rebate on my dual Scottish Power energy bill (thanks Martin!), this has covered the majority of the repair bill, so in real terms it's cost me very little.
I'm sure I'll be back on here very soon with hopefully some minor queries, as I attempt to make everything as "perfect" as possible!
Cheers again guys.

check 'internet options'... has this hi jacked your home page yet ? i had 'about blank' in mine which was a !!!!!! site, luckily i'm on broadband so it could not dial up, in the end i had to completely wipe my machine to rid of it, i tried all the adwares /spybots etc but to no avail it kept popping up againnever put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow0

Everything's fine now, so no point in checking my home page. Like you though, everything I tried was to no avail. I wonder if you had the same virus as me (Trojan Norio)? I really think that if's a particularly nasty virus and you can't get rid of it through the normal anti-virus route, you have little alternative but to wipe your disc clean and start again.Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0
