  • Hi, I've been considering buying a satellite dish for some time to receive free to air channels (either the Lidl one or other alternatives) (because I can't receive terrestrial analogue or digital signals where I live).

Many of the posts I've read through suggest that C4 and C5 can't be received via free to air satellites, if I've read correctly. Is there any way round this? If I did switch away from Telewest for TV, then I would want C4 and C5 via satellite (as well all the other 'usual' free to air channels).

E.g. Sky's freesat website suggests that both C4 and C5 are available via its Free to Air service in return for a one off £20 cost - so is this a solution?

Can anyone recommend the best solutions for free to air satellite dishes. I live in West Yorkshire, if that has any effect.

All advice very much appreciated. Thank you.

channel 4 and 5 are not fta but are ftv. You would get neither of these with this satellite kit, only with a sky box and freesat card, and thats it Im afraid.

If you getting the satellite to view 28 east then your better off buying the stuff on ebay and that way you get the fta and ftv channels its not expensive, around the same price that you would pay for the lidl kit. The box and card £30-40 the dish and LNB £10 coaxal cable and f conectors les than £10

The lidl kit is good if you want to get fta stuff on 13 east or 19 east, although it would have to be a decent size dish
  • Hi,

We used to have sky but decided it was too expensive. We still have the dish and cable installed - is this usable if I buy this or similar decoder?

You should be able to simply get the Lidl box and connect to the dish. Only thing that may need changing is the LNB - depending on how old that dish is. But I doubt it's that old.
You won't get C4 and C5 with the FTA box though.
  • Seems like a good system so far. Does anyone know what the IF output connector on the rear of the unit is for? Can I daisy-chain another satellite receiver (analogue) through it to the same LNB?

Also, has anyone any recommendations on the best motor units for motorised operation (and how to set it up!)?

    TIA.
  • Would I be better getting olde Sky box and free-to-satellite card??

If you want channels 4 and 5, yes.

it says you can in the book for my SL65-12 - but I haven't tried it.

Beware that the Lidl kit is a 40mm flange for the LNB mounting, and that $ky dishes are often different.

best with a secondhand $ky receiver and FTA card (£20), as mentioned by others.
